About The Position

This position is in the Fayetteville Division Project Development Unit (PDU). The responsibilities of this position include assisting the Bridge Program Manager in data collection and project coordination, as well as assisting the Division Design Construct Engineer in delivery of Division-Managed projects from conception to completion, including project feasibility, planning, public involvement, project design, right-of-way acquisition, environmental issues, budget, and project Letting to ensure timely delivery. Position duties require proficiency in the preparation of preliminary highway design, final highway construction plans using MicroStation, GEOPak, Open Roads Designer (ORD) software and a thorough understanding of intermediate design techniques and procedures. Additional duties include developing estimates of quantities, special provisions, and contract documents for Division Let projects. This position assists higher level engineers in computer systems, applications, and configuration tasks. Must be able to operate a state vehicle. A valid NC Driver's License is preferred.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in the preparation of preliminary highway design, final highway construction plans using MicroStation, GEOPak, Open Roads Designer (ORD) software.
  • Thorough understanding of intermediate design techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to operate a state vehicle.
  • Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Clear and timely written and verbal communication skills with internal and external customers, such as local agencies, private consulting firms, and the public is strongly desired.
  • Ability to recognize potential problem areas early in the planning or design process so potential problems can be resolved in a context sensitive manner is also desired.
  • General knowledge of the NCDOT organizational structure and operations is needed to facilitate necessary contacts between numerous branches to gather required information.
  • Experience in understanding contracts, plans, standards, and specifications
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, software, and mathematical functions
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans
  • Experience maintaining, and completing standard records, reports, and correspondence
  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups.
  • Experience in MicroStation/Open Roads designer software.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of preliminary highway design, final highway construction plans using MicroStation, GEOPak, Open Roads Designer (ORD) software.
  • Developing estimates of quantities, special provisions, and contract documents for Division Let projects.
  • Assisting higher level engineers in computer systems, applications, and configuration tasks.
  • Reviewing plans, proposals, and estimates for Division Managed projects to ensure that they have been prepared in accordance with NCDOT policies and procedures, federal requirements, technical data pertaining to each project.
  • Instructing and directing the corrections of errors made with any plans, proposals, and quantity estimates.
