The role of Engineering Technician requires the application of scientific and technical knowledge and the use of independent judgment in the areas of engineering and construction. Duties include plan review, research, technical writing, map reading, field inspections, computer operation, materials testing, drafting, explaining policies and procedures to the public to achieve understanding, and cooperation and compliance with codes. This position produces a variety of technical materials, correspondence, plans, specifications, cost estimates and project schedules and ensures quality control and compliance with applicable regulations, standards and policies. Assignments may also include the inspection of general construction and engineering maintenance projects for contractor compliance and to maintain extensive project records. Work is performed with considerable independence and is reviewed for technical accuracy and adherence to standards upon completion and through reports prepared. Support the planning, inspection, and construction on a variety of engineering projects, both public and private, by providing technical expertise and field support. Ensure projects are constructed in compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and procedures; ability to identify and recommend when corrective actions are necessary. Communicates with contactors, Town staff, designers and the public to assure work is completed as directed and in conformance with plans and specifications. Utilize GPS survey equipment and traditional surveying methods to support project planning, design, construction documentation, and inspection. Reads and interpret construction plans, specifications, and standard details, and apply them effectively to field conditions to support construction layout, inspection, and quality control. Aids in preparing engineering drawings, maps, and exhibits using Bentley Microstation and ArcGIS. Oversees and assists in project implementation and management from initial design phase through final project completion, under direction of a professional engineer. Communicates technical and non-technical information verbally and in writing in a clear and professional manner with engineers, contractors, outside agencies and members of the general public. Promotes safe work practices by maintaining a hazard-free environment and working collaboratively with coworkers and supervisors to identify and address safety concerns. Performs other duties as assigned.
