The BD Technologies & Innovation Campus, located in the Research Triangle Park, North Carolina helps bring high-impact, new-to-world innovations into development. The Engineering Technician II will be part of a multi-disciplinary Innovation team supporting a variety of medical technologies and solutions. The Technician II is an experienced hands‑on contributor within BD’s Digital Engineering – 3D Printing & Prototyping organization. This role supports 3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing by independently operating equipment, preparing materials, executing post-processing workflows, performing inspections, troubleshooting routine issues, and supporting laboratory operations with minimal supervision. Technician II personnel demonstrate strong technical execution, attention to detail, and growing ownership of day-to-day operations. They can assist with training Technician I employees, collaborate closely with engineers and senior technicians, and help maintain efficient, safe, and high‑quality laboratory workflows.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma Required plus 2 years relevant hands-on industry experience with proven ability to perform model finishing, industrial 3D printer operation, experimentation, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Experience operating AM equipment required (professional, academic, or equivalent hands‑on experience)
  • Proven computer experience
  • MS Office (Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to plan and operate to meet tight scheduling.
  • Experience with 3D printing post-processing methods.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • the ability to use CAD software is preferred.
  • Organized and time-oriented individual with the ability and drive to contribute towards the quick turnaround time on finished models while ensuring fine detail and accuracy.
  • Open to exploring new techniques related to 3D Printing or Digital Engineering-related areas.

Responsibilities

  • Independently operate multiple AM technologies (SLA, PolyJet, FDM/FFF, DLP, MJF, etc.) following established procedures.
  • Prepare build files and machine setups with limited guidance, including resin loading, tray configuration, bed leveling, material changes, and parameter verification.
  • Perform more advanced post-processing tasks such as: Detailed support removal, Surface sanding, smoothing, polishing, Precision curing, Bonding, assembly, and minor finishing work, Dyeing and Painting.
  • Identify and troubleshoot common printing issues (adhesion failure, part distortion, material defects, support artifacts, basic machine errors).
  • Inspect parts using calipers, micrometers, gauges, optical tools, and visual standards to confirm accuracy and quality.
  • Document job results, part measurements, process parameters, and equipment logs accurately and promptly.
  • Communicate non‑conformances, equipment issues, or unexpected results to engineers or senior technicians.
  • Support development of standardized documentation and process templates.
  • Perform regular equipment cleaning, minor preventive maintenance, and consumable replacement.
  • Maintain organized workspaces for 3D printing, molding, materials, tools, and post-processing areas.
  • Handle chemicals, resins, pellets, solvents, isopropyl alcohol, and other materials safely in accordance with SDS requirements.
  • Assist with inventory management of materials, consumables, PPE, and post‑processing supplies.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, designers, and project teams.
  • Provide guidance and on‑the‑job training to Technician I team members.
  • Help streamline workflow by identifying bottlenecks and suggesting minor improvements to equipment usage, scheduling, or workspace layout.
  • Support cross‑site communication when coordinating jobs or sharing best practices.
  • Ensure consistent use of PPE and adherence to laboratory safety protocols.
  • Follow SDS guidelines for resin, chemicals, and material handling.
  • Report unsafe conditions or equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and compliant engineering laboratory environment.
