About The Position

This is a limited duration, full-time position for an Engineering Technician I, focusing on temporary signage installation for space reservations within the public right-of-way. The role involves setting up and removing signage, ensuring permit compliance, and interacting with the public to maintain safe and efficient street use. The position performs semi-skilled tasks related to temporary signage and managing temporary street use permits, ensuring compliance with city codes and maintaining accurate records. The Engineering Technician I will perform independent field tasks while maintaining strong communication with team members. The Temporary Street Use Permitting (TSUP) office handles approximately 22,000 permits annually for various temporary uses of public right-of-way, including residential/commercial moves, property maintenance, construction, utility work, and event-related loading/unloading.

Requirements

  • Experience responding to customer and/or public inquiries by explaining and interpreting a variety of regulations and procedures (e.g., codes, policies, standards, fees, and procedures to the public).
  • Experience searching and obtaining information from engineering or architectural documents (e.g., drawings, regulations, reports, application forms, property records, specifications and various kinds of maps, graphs and construction plans).
  • Experience gathering, recording and analyzing data to prepare files, documents and recommendations.
  • Experience operating standard office software (e.g., Word, Excel, and Access).
  • Experience providing customer service and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work under general supervision and perform detailed work in a time-sensitive and fast-paced environment.
  • Organized: Able to use a digital dashboard to track tasks, statuses, and deadlines.
  • Problem Solver: Able to identify problems early and value collaboration, utilize active listening and effective communication, and willing to utilize others to find resolutions.
