Engineering Manager, Finance Engineering

Anthropic•Seattle, WA
•$320,000 - $405,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Anthropic is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the team building its finance engineering platform. The platform will provide a single entry point for finance events, an append-only ledger, and an accounting engine that posts each event exactly once and maintains traceability to its source. The goal is a continuous close with no material issues and audit-grade controls as Claude usage, products, and pricing models grow. The manager will hire and develop engineers and set the quality bar for building and operating the platform in production. Platform users include people and Claude agents, which use the same APIs and controls. The role partners with engineering teams in Billing, Compute, and Infra on contracts and APIs, as well as with product owners and finance operations on priorities and requirements. A finance background is not required; Anthropic will teach the domain to candidates with experience leading teams that build correctness-critical backend systems.

Requirements

  • Have led teams that build and run high-volume backend systems where correctness matters, such as ledgers, billing, payments, metering, or other systems of record.
  • Have built or run event-driven systems with idempotent processing, replay, and backfill, and understand how to keep them correct in production.
  • Have sound judgment on platform boundaries, data contracts, and API design.
  • Have hired and grown engineers and set engineering standards for platforms.
  • Work effectively across functions with upstream engineering teams, finance, and auditors, and clearly explain technical trade-offs to non-engineering partners in writing and in person.
  • Have a bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Have a field of study relevant to the role, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Have 3+ years of engineering management experience and 8+ years total in the industry.
  • Have built developer platforms or paved paths used by other builders.
  • Have worked with Go and streaming systems such as Pub/Sub or Kafka.
  • Have built with LLMs and agents, including MCP.
  • Have built or run a ledger or sub-ledger and working knowledge of double-entry accounting.
  • Have managed teams through audit and compliance work, such as SOX change management, segregation of duties, and audit trails.
  • Have worked with ERP or financial systems, such as Workday Financials or Oracle Financials.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a team of engineers by hiring, coaching, and maintaining a high bar for engineering quality.
  • Own delivery of the finance-event entry point and its governed contracts, along with the accounting ledger and engine, ensuring each event is posted exactly once and traceable to its source.
  • Be accountable for production services used in real time by other engineering teams, such as tax and collections services in the billing flow.
  • Provide finance applications and agents with platform support, including SDKs and frameworks, scoped access, SOX guardrails, observability, and finance-specific capabilities not available in Claude products out of the box.
  • Define and own reliability and correctness standards, including SLOs for services called by other teams, tests for key upstream calculations on every change, and daily source-to-books accuracy and completeness checks.
  • Align technical designs, data contracts, and APIs with engineering leaders in Billing, Compute, and Infra.
  • Reduce the time required for finance to support a new product, program, or compute buildout.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits.
  • Optional equity donation matching.
  • Generous vacation and parental leave.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Office space for collaboration.
