Engineering Manager, Finance Engineering

Anthropic•San Francisco, WA

About The Position

Anthropic is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the team building and operating its finance engineering platform. The platform will process finance events from sources including usage and billing, compute, infrastructure assets, and leases. Its goals include a single entry point for finance events, an append-only accounting ledger, and an accounting engine that posts each event exactly once and traces it to its source. The role supports a continuous close with zero material issues and audit-grade controls as Claude usage and the range of products and pricing models grow. The manager will hire and develop engineers, set engineering standards, and be accountable for platform delivery and production operations. The platform serves people and Claude agents through shared APIs and controls. The role works with engineering teams in Billing, Compute, and Infra on contracts and APIs, and with product owners and finance operations on priorities and needs. A finance background is not required; Anthropic will teach the domain to candidates with experience leading teams building correctness-critical backend systems.

Requirements

  • Experience leading teams that build and run high-volume backend systems where correctness matters, such as ledgers, billing, payments, metering, or other systems of record.
  • Experience building or running event-driven systems with idempotent processing, replay, and backfill, and knowledge of how to keep them correct in production.
  • Sound judgment on platform boundaries, data contracts, and API design.
  • Experience hiring and growing engineers and setting engineering standards for platforms.
  • Ability to work across functions with upstream engineering teams, finance, and auditors, and to clearly explain technical trade-offs to non-engineering partners in writing and in person.
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • A field of study relevant to the role, as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 3 years of engineering management experience and at least 8 years of total industry experience.
  • Experience building developer platforms or paved paths used by other builders.
  • Experience with Go and streaming systems such as Pub/Sub or Kafka.
  • Experience building with LLMs and agents, including MCP.
  • Experience building or running a ledger or sub-ledger, with working knowledge of double-entry accounting.
  • Experience managing teams through audit and compliance work, such as SOX change management, segregation of duties, and audit trails.
  • Experience with ERP or financial systems such as Workday Financials or Oracle Financials.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow an engineering team by hiring, coaching, and maintaining a high bar for engineering quality.
  • Own delivery of the finance-event entry point and its governed contracts, along with the accounting ledger and engine, so events are posted exactly once and traceable to their sources.
  • Be accountable for production services used in real time by other engineering teams, including tax and collections services in the billing flow.
  • Provide finance applications and agents with platform support, including SDKs and frameworks, scoped access, SOX guardrails, observability, and capabilities finance needs beyond those available in Claude products out of the box.
  • Define and own reliability and correctness standards, including SLOs for services called by other teams, tests of key upstream calculations on every change, and daily source-to-books accuracy and completeness checks.
  • Align technical designs, data contracts, and APIs with engineering leaders in Billing, Compute, and Infra.
  • Reduce the time it takes finance to support a new product, program, or compute buildout.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits.
  • Optional equity donation matching.
  • Generous vacation and parental leave.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Office space for collaboration with colleagues.
