About The Position

Mochi Health is seeking an Engineering Manager to join their team in San Francisco, CA. This role is crucial for scaling, aligning, and unblocking the engineering organization as the company expands into preventative healthcare. The engineering team operates with high leverage, focusing on a pragmatic approach to power a profitable healthcare platform. The Engineering Manager will be a hands-on technical leader responsible for mentoring junior developers, recruiting senior talent, maintaining high technical craft, and collaborating with clinical leadership to design solutions for complex healthcare challenges. The role involves working with AI-first technologies and ensuring AI-assisted output is rigorously audited for compliance and performance. The ideal candidate is a deeply technical leader with a strong product sense and experience in highly regulated industries, who fosters a culture of high ownership and collaboration.

Requirements

  • Pragmatic team builder and mentor with a track record of recruiting top engineering talent and coaching early-career developers.
  • Immense technical credibility, with experience as a Senior or Staff engineer who has built and operated high-stakes distributed systems.
  • Deep product sense with 2+ years of formal engineering management experience.
  • Experience managing teams in highly regulated, operationally heavy industries (e.g., healthcare, fintech, logistics).
  • Ability to manage through context, not control, empowering engineers with autonomy.
  • Low ego, high standards, and excellent cross-functional communication skills.
  • Excited to work in-person, 5 days a week in the San Francisco office.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and Scale the Team: Be a hands-on technical leader focused on team growth, reviewing PRs, pairing with junior engineers, and actively recruiting top-tier Senior and Staff engineers.
  • Drive Alignment & Velocity: Manage a diverse team, provide clear business context, ensure technical efforts align with the product roadmap, and clear organizational roadblocks.
  • Co-Design the Clinical Product: Partner with Operations, Product, and Clinical leadership to translate complex medical realities and regulatory workflows into technical roadmaps.
  • Elevate the Craft & Govern AI: Manage risks in an AI-first environment, ensuring AI-assisted output is audited for edge cases, performance, and HIPAA compliance.
  • Foster a High-Ownership Culture: Ensure fluid context sharing, cultivate a team of low-ego, versatile builders through feedback, mentorship, and performance management.
