About The Position

ZipRecruiter is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead its Ranking team within the Marketplace organization. The team develops products, platforms, and intelligence systems that use machine learning and AI to optimize the job marketplace, helping jobseekers find relevant jobs while delivering results for employers. The role leads a senior team of Data Scientists, generalists, and Machine Learning Engineers, with responsibility for team development, technical direction, and product-line outcomes.

The manager partners with Product Management and Decision Science to shape the roadmap, define metrics, and establish success criteria for marketplace balancing tests. They assess the team's technical work and the effective use of machine learning and AI, and design, build, and deploy machine-learning pipelines for modeling jobseeker behavior and marketplace dynamics. They also monitor model speed and accuracy while balancing business value with the health of the team and technology stack.

Requirements

• At least 6 years of experience in a fast-paced software development environment at scale.
• At least 2 years of experience as a software engineering leader.
• Experience as an experienced Machine Learning manager, or as a Senior/Staff Data Scientist or Machine Learning Engineer seeking to transition into management.
• Ability to assess technical value, communicate effectively with ML engineers, and evaluate whether AI is being used effectively in day-to-day work.
• Strong communication skills for collaboration with leadership, product, and data science teams.
• Deep experience with machine-learning algorithms, techniques, and best practices.
• Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures and algorithms, and coding skills.
• Experience with ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn.
• Python experience; the posting specifies Python instead of R.
• Java or Scala experience.
• Applied experience with embeddings and/or vectors to solve business problems efficiently using established techniques, tools, frameworks, and models.
• Demonstrated ability to build reproducible ML pipelines, including experiment tracking, data and model versioning, and environment management.
• Experience working through multiple versions of the same product.
• Experience working on a B2C or B2B product.

Nice To Haves

• BS, MS, or PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or a related technical field.
• At least 3 years of engineering management experience.
• Demonstrated experience innovating novel approaches and solutions to ambiguous problems.
