About The Position

This role is crucial for shaping Calendly's platform security and integrity by leading both Identity & Access Management (IAM) and Trust & Safety initiatives. The Engineering Manager will design, develop, and maintain IAM services for scalability, resiliency, and performance, while also overseeing fraud prevention, abuse mitigation, and compliance through automated threat detection and response. The position influences platform architecture and engineering best practices, contributing to product success. The ideal candidate has a strong background in people leadership, domain experience, technical competency, distributed systems experience, a results-driven mindset, and fosters ownership and operational excellence. This role reports to the Head of Foundational Product Capabilities.

Requirements

  • 5+ years experience as a people leader within a platform engineering organization
  • Domain expertise with customer-facing Identity & Access Management (IAM) & Trust & Safety
  • Specifically authentication, authorization, and security
  • Proven experience in Trust & Safety, fraud prevention, abuse mitigation
  • Experience navigating complex legal and regulatory landscapes
  • Strong technical acumen, with a deep understanding of detection and prevention systems, machine learning applications, and scalable platform solutions
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems and cloud computing
  • Experience building, operating, and maintaining high-traffic, high-availability platforms and systems
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex systems to identify root causes and implement effective mitigations and resolutions
  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation and propose new solutions or improvements that align with organizational goals
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong collaborative skills and the ability to work effectively within a team, including remote and distributed teams
  • Proven leadership capabilities with experience mentoring and guiding engineering teams
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies, changing requirements, and evolving organizational needs
  • Authorized to work lawfully in the United States of America
  • Availability for participation in on-call rotation

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, manage, and mentor a diverse team of IAM and Trust & Safety engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Provide hands-on mentorship, guidance, and decision-making to help engineering teams deliver effective, high-quality solutions
  • Own and drive execution on critical initiatives, ensuring timely, high-quality outcomes while promoting incremental delivery and impact
  • Define and evolve our IAM capabilities to meet future demands while shaping the Trust & Safety roadmap in alignment with company priorities and emerging threats
  • Design and implement scalable systems to detect, prevent, and respond to fraud and abuse, leveraging key metrics to measure effectiveness
  • Partner with Product, Design, Engineering, Legal, and Compliance teams to embed Trust & Safety considerations throughout the development lifecycle
  • Shape technical strategy and North Star Architecture while guiding the design and implementation of key services and components
  • Oversee the evolution of Calendly’s architecture from a monolithic codebase into high availability services
  • Build out foundational APIs and capabilities that enable the engineering team to innovate quickly
  • Work closely with product-focused engineering teams to understand their needs
  • Deep dive into data services to discover new capabilities and insights that provide value to users
  • Mentor and grow engineers
  • Research and uncover solutions autonomously
  • Plan for the future of the team
  • Participate in on-call rotation
