Engineering Manager, Compute Components

Muon SpaceSan Jose, CA
$210,000 - $234,000Hybrid

About The Position

Muon Space is hiring an Engineering Manager (Manager or Senior Manager level, based on experience) to lead our Compute Components team as part of the High Performance Compute (HPC) team. This role focuses on the 'how': how the team delivers, how it grows, and how its engineers stay focused, supported, and successful. The Engineering Manager will partner with the Staff Architect and Platform Engineer to translate architecture and roadmap into predictable, high-quality deliveries, and will act as a coach and advocate for the team as it scales. This position is hybrid and requires working on-site in our San Jose, CA office three days per week. The role reports to the head of the High Performance Compute (HPC) team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of engineering management experience (with additional years qualifying you for the Senior Manager level), on top of a solid IC background in FPGA, embedded, GPU, or hardware-adjacent software engineering.
  • Direct prior hands-on implementation experience in FPGA, GPU or general software development.
  • Track record of shipping complex hardware-integrated systems on time and to quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to grow and retain engineering talent, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and career development.
  • Strong training in modern engineering delivery practices: design reviews, unit and integration testing, delivery pipelines, incident review, and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to represent the team's work and needs to executive leadership, adjacent teams, and external partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Extensive prior hands-on implementation background in FPGA, GPU, or embedded compute.
  • Experience managing teams delivering into space, aerospace, or other mission-critical environments.
  • Experience scaling a team through a growth phase (roughly doubling headcount, forming sub-teams, or standing up new competencies).

Responsibilities

  • Be an empathetic, hands-on people manager: coach engineers, run 1:1s, own performance and career growth, and create a healthy team culture.
  • Together with your team, agree on deliveries and ensure they land on time and to quality.
  • Clear the path for your engineers so they can focus on building: removing blockers, absorbing organizational overhead, and shielding the team where needed.
  • Own the team's design-flow robustness: strengthen module- and integration-test practices to reduce rework and late-cycle surprises.
  • Ensure all of the team's technical environments (build systems, simulation, lab benches, delivery pipelines) are maintained and continuously improved, in partnership with the Platform Engineer.
  • Support with hiring (sourcing, interviewing, and closing) to scale the team responsibly as the company grows.
  • Partner with the Staff Architect on technical direction and with the Platform Engineer on planning, reporting, and roadmap tracking.
  • Support the long-term scaling of the team: team structure, mentorships, and knowledge sharing.
