Engineering Manager, Agentic Commerce

About The Position

Cloudflare is hiring an Engineering Manager to build and lead the engineering team responsible for Agentic Commerce products, including machine-to-machine payments and monetization capabilities such as the Monetization Gateway. The role owns people leadership, execution, and engineering quality, in close partnership with Product Management and teams across Cloudflare. It requires strong technical credibility: the manager should understand the systems the team operates, assess architectural trade-offs involving payment rails and cryptographic authentication, and engage directly with technical problems when needed. The position is focused on building a strong team and delivering reliable systems and products, rather than serving as a tech lead who also has direct reports. The team is developing infrastructure and products that let businesses control how AI agents pay for Internet resources. Its work spans high-throughput web infrastructure, low-latency transaction processing, digital wallets, agentic payment protocols, and connections between mainstream fiat commerce rails and decentralized protocols. The role may require flexibility to be on call outside standard working hours to address technical issues. The position is available in London or Lisbon. For Lisbon-based hires, the estimated annual salary is €74,000–€93,000. The role is eligible to participate in Cloudflare’s equity plan. Requirements

Experience leading and developing high-performing engineering teams, with evidence of team delivery and engineer growth.
Technical credibility with experienced engineers, including the ability to review designs, assess distributed-systems or payment-platform trade-offs, and identify when deeper investigation is needed.
Ability to manage a team working across multiple related technical areas and create clarity amid ambiguity.
Strong commitment to reliability and quality, particularly for systems handling monetary transactions or machine authorization.
Strong product judgment and experience partnering with Product Management to determine what to build, improve, or avoid building.
Ability to find structure and make progress when the opportunity is clearer than the roadmap.
Clear communication skills, including explaining complex technical decisions to engineers and non-engineers.
Strong technical grounding in distributed systems, low-latency transaction processing, API design, web security, or adjacent areas.
Experience operating systems where correctness, reliability, and security are as important as feature delivery.
Track record of hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineers.
Experience taking products or major capabilities from an ambiguous opportunity to a clear customer outcome.
Strong written and verbal communication.

Nice To Haves

Experience building or operating products involving traditional payment rails, digital wallets, or open authorization/authentication standards such as OAuth, WebAuthn, or Web Bot Auth.
Familiarity with emerging agentic or machine-to-machine payment protocols such as x402, AP2, ACP, or UCP.
Experience building hybrid fiat/crypto payment infrastructure.
Familiarity with Cloudflare’s developer platform, including Workers, Durable Objects, and KV, or with edge computing architectures.
Experience turning complex underlying systems into useful payment or commerce products for a broad audience.
Experience with usage-based billing, metering engines, attribution systems, or complex commercial pricing models.
Previous experience working in payments and on payments technology.

Responsibilities

Manage, coach, and grow engineers working on high-throughput payment pipelines, agent authentication, and web-scale commerce architecture.
Set clear priorities, establish predictable delivery, and give engineers the context and autonomy to own meaningful product areas.
Lead development of agentic payment systems using emerging open standards such as x402, Web Bot Auth, ACP, and UCP to enable low-latency machine-to-machine micropayments.
Lead engineering for usage metering, pricing definition engines, outcome verification, and revenue attribution models for agentic workflows.
Build capabilities that give businesses visibility into and control over revenue streams generated by agents.
Partner with Product Management to understand customer problems, shape the roadmap, and translate opportunities into clear engineering outcomes.
Connect mainstream and decentralized technologies, working with blockchain teams while focusing execution on mainstream, high-throughput web and fiat commerce rails.
Balance near-term product delivery with technical investments that allow promising ideas to grow.
Own operational health, including observability, incident response, cryptographic security, and long-term reliability.
Develop technical leaders and enable engineers to lead architecture and implementation.
Communicate complex technical decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, and provide direct feedback.
Be flexible to participate in on-call coverage outside standard working hours as needed.
