About The Position

This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days per week onsite in Auburn Hills, MI. The Engineering Leader will implement and execute capacity and capability management, ensure effective workflow by engaging with cross-functional leads and customers, and drive process improvements to achieve financial results. This role typically supports local team members but may also support remote employees. The leader is responsible for driving a high-performing team by managing performance and development, operating effectively in the UL matrix to support culture changes and transformation efforts, and holding themselves and the team accountable for results. They will assist the Engineering Manager in defining goals and performance objectives, and metrics to execute strategy. The role involves developing and coaching employees through training, career counseling, feedback, and guidance to drive high performance and morale. Ensuring understanding of and compliance with all established policies and requirements is crucial. The leader will increase customer loyalty, anticipate customer needs, provide proactive solutions, and gather, share, and respond to customer feedback, coaching employees to do the same. Support for sales includes building relationships with customers, understanding the pipeline, obtaining feedback, and identifying actions and solutions. Direct support to customers and the team involves providing technical guidance and engineering judgment to complete projects and resolve issues such as customer complaints, unusual requests, and technical advice, ensuring quality and adherence to policies and standards. The role involves leading or participating in discussions to drive business initiatives through brainstorming, empowering the team to find new opportunities for growth and financial goals, and delegating Project Handlers to establish appropriate test programs. Support and guidance will be provided to project handlers to ensure compliance with requirements, changes in scope, and customer notifications. The leader will explain UL family of company's policies, procedures, and requirements, negotiate completion dates and sample requirements, and ensure an effective experience with UL. They may handle some projects and/or act as a lead reviewer to support workflow and demand. Communication of UL's Vision and Mission, leading and embracing change, collaborating to build trust, and developing strong cross-functional networks and global relationships are key. Employees are expected to read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and all physical and digital security practices. Other duties may be directed.

Requirements

  • University degree in Business Administration, Management, Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience in the automotive industry.
  • Prior experience leading EV battery testing activities.
  • Solid experience as lead or participant in cross-functional or global projects or worked in multiple functions or regions.
  • Ability to manage employee performance through development of performance expectations and goals, managing employee relations issues, identifying and addressing training needs, planning and executing against required staffing levels and assisting in operational planning.
  • Ability to present information in a concise, relevant and powerful manner.
  • Ability to listen, learn and teach.
  • Ability to work in and understand diverse cultural environments.
  • Strong customer collaboration, project management and business acumen skills.

Responsibilities

  • Implements and executes capacity and capability management under the guidance of the Engineering Manager.
  • Ensures effective workflow by engaging with cross functional leads and customers in order to understand scope of projects and technical needs to assign resources effectively.
  • Responsible for driving process improvements to ensure financial results are achieved.
  • Drives a high performing team by managing the performance and development of team members.
  • Operates effectively in the UL matrix to actively support and drive high performance culture changes, transformation efforts and people engagement.
  • Holds team and self accountable for results, assists engineering Manager in defining goals and performance objectives and metrics to execute strategy.

  • Supports sales by building relationships with customers, requiring a deep understanding of what is in pipeline, obtaining feedback on how UL can do better, what is working well and identifies actions and solutions.
  • Provides direct support to customers and team by providing technical guidance and engineering judgment to complete projects and address all issues arising needing resolution (i.e.. customer complaints, unusual requests, technical advice).
  • Ensures quality and adherence to policies and standards requirements.

  • Empowers and holds team accountable to find new opportunities to effectively drive growth & financial goals (revenue, profit, enterprise value, etc).
  • Delegates Project Handlers to establish the appropriate test programs.
  • Supports and guides project handlers to ensure compliance with requirements, changes in project scope or specifications and customer notifications.
  • Explains UL family of company's policies, procedures and requirements, negotiates completion dates and sample requirements, and ensures an effective experience with the UL family of companies.
  • May handle some projects and/or act as lead reviewer to support workflow and demand.
  • Communicates and exemplifies ULs Vision and Mission.
  • Leads, promotes and embraces change through self and team.
