Engineering Lead, Transportation & Logistics

Avathon•Pleasanton, CA
•$160,000 - $220,000•Onsite

About The Position

Avathon is hiring an Engineering Lead to build and run its Logistics and Transportation product on the Avathon platform. The role leads the team responsible for bringing shipment, carrier, and transportation management system (TMS) data into the platform, predicting delays, tracing their impact on production, and enabling AI agents to manage exceptions. Key challenges include integrating inconsistent data from multiple carriers and systems, processing events in near real time, and linking delayed shipments to affected work orders. This is a hands-on Product Engineering leadership role involving coding, architecture ownership, and engineering team leadership. The lead will own the architecture and production quality of logistics services, collaborate with product and AI teams, and support customer implementations and escalations. The position is based in the Bay Area, California, and requires reporting to the Pleasanton office five days a week; it is not remote.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years leading engineers.
  • Experience building transportation, logistics, or visibility software.
  • Strong backend skills in Python, Java, Go, or a similar language, including experience building APIs and integrations.
  • Experience with event streaming and real-time data, such as Kafka or Pub/Sub.
  • Working knowledge of EDI, carrier APIs, TMS data models, and freight operations.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Must be based in the Bay Area, California, and report to the Pleasanton office five days a week.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with transportation, logistics, or visibility software at a vendor such as Oracle (OTM), Blue Yonder, Manhattan Associates, e2open, project44, FourKites, Descartes, Flexport, or Samsara.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS.
  • Knowledge of geospatial data and graph data models.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical architecture for logistics services, including shipment and event models, ETA services, exception workflows, and routing.
  • Build and maintain integrations with TMS platforms, carrier and 3PL APIs, EDI feeds, and visibility providers.
  • Build streaming pipelines that process shipment events in near real time and maintain accurate shipment state.
  • Productionize ETA, anomaly detection, and routing models developed by AI scientists.
  • Model shipments, lanes, carriers, and orders in the Computational Knowledge Graph so delays can be traced to affected production orders and parts.
  • Work with the agent team on exception management, including detection, prioritization, recommendations, and routing to the appropriate team.
  • Turn customer-specific integrations into reusable connectors and product components.
  • Lead and grow a team of engineers; set priorities, review designs and code, and mentor team members.
  • Partner with the Logistics product manager on roadmap, scope, and release planning.
  • Own the quality, performance, and reliability of logistics services in production.
  • Work with forward deployed teams on customer go-lives and escalations.
