About The Position

The Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking an Engineering Intern to join District 2’s Primary Design Team. The intern will work on highway repair, rehabilitation, and/or safety projects, gaining extensive experience in CADD and learning the Iowa DOT’s design processes and policies. The work includes identifying project problems, developing solutions, documenting design decisions, estimating quantities and costs, and preparing final construction plans for project letting. The intern will also gain experience coordinating designs with other DOT offices, local governments whose facilities may be affected, and potentially private consulting firms. The position runs from May through August and is 40 hours per week.

Requirements

• Completion of at least two years in civil, construction, materials, or transportation engineering, or in an engineering management curriculum at an accredited four-year college or university.
• Eligibility for junior status upon returning to school.

Responsibilities

• Identify problems to be addressed by highway repair, rehabilitation, and/or safety projects.
• Design solutions to address project problems.

• Prepare cost estimates.
• Design and draft final construction plans for project letting.
