About The Position

General Motors is seeking an Engineering Designer to develop integrated, high-quality, manufacturable designs for the Engine space. The role translates vehicle, propulsion, structural, manufacturing, and program requirements into robust virtual designs supporting performance, safety, durability, serviceability, and production readiness. It focuses on complete Engine systems and includes ownership or support of Siemens NX math models, design criteria, typical sections, clearance studies, subsystem integration, NX Analysis, material and mass data, design reviews, and on-time math releases. The Engineering Designer collaborates with design leadership, design release engineering, designers, engineering, manufacturing, joining, quality, suppliers, plant, program, and service teams to identify risks, resolve integration issues, and deliver release-quality data through the Global Vehicle Development Process. The role is hybrid, with at least three on-site days per week at the Warren Tech Center, Tuesday through Thursday, or another frequency determined by the manager. Relocation assistance is not available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, engineering technology, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Two to five years of experience in automotive or mechanical CAD, engineering design, or a related product-development environment.
  • Demonstrated experience using Siemens NX for parametric modeling, model organization, design intent, references, constraints, and model-quality practices.
  • Understanding of automotive or mechanical structural design and the ability to reason about load paths, stiffness, strength, joints, reinforcements, materials, and interfaces.
  • Experience with virtual integration, packaging, clearance studies, configurations, usage validation, or comparable design-integration activities.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance concepts, and variation management.
  • Working knowledge of design for manufacturability and design for assembly.
  • Ability to interpret requirements, identify ambiguity or conflict, and maintain traceability from requirements through design, review, analysis, release, and issue closure.
  • Ability to complete assigned work accurately and on schedule while managing multiple interfaces and program commitments.
  • Strong technical communication, problem-solving, collaboration, ownership, and follow-through skills.
  • Willingness and ability to work on-site at the Warren Tech Center at least three days per week—Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday—or at another frequency determined by the manager.
  • Must not require GM immigration-related sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing structural sheet-metal components, including stamping, forming, draw direction, flanges, hemming or joining interfaces, local reinforcements, springback, and process capability.
  • Knowledge of casting processes, including draft, wall thickness, ribs, fillets, porosity risk, machining, datum strategy, and process limitations.
  • Advanced Siemens NX experience, including complex surfacing, expressions, templates, checks, reusable modeling practices, or workflow improvement.
  • Broader NX Analysis experience and ability to connect analysis results to design changes, performance, and risk.
  • Experience with joining strategies and the relationship between joint design, load transfer, durability, process capability, and production performance.
  • Experience with DFMEA, tolerance analysis, durability thinking, design optimization, or failure-mode anticipation.
  • Experience leading configuration or design changes across load paths, interfaces, tooling, joining, validation, and released data.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence technical decisions without formal authority through facts, alternatives, and practical recommendations.
  • Experience coaching or developing less-experienced designers in NX modeling, virtual integration, load-path reasoning, DFM/DFA, or review discipline.
  • Master’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain robust, accurate, production-oriented Siemens NX parametric models for assigned components and subsystems.
  • Create virtual vehicle integration solutions aligned with program requirements, design principles, packaging constraints, design criteria, and subsystem interfaces.
  • Develop and refine NX criteria and typical sections using approved modeling methods and program standards.
  • Establish and control hard points, packaging zones, clearances, service access, and critical interfaces.
  • Apply structural design fundamentals, including stiffness, strength, fatigue, buckling, section efficiency, joints, materials, reinforcements, and local load introduction.
  • Evaluate primary and secondary load paths for durability, crash, support, and propulsion-related conditions.
  • Identify load introduction points, reactions, joints, discontinuities, weak links, and opportunities for efficient structural improvement.
  • Perform or support clearance, usage, configuration, and virtual studies across components, subsystems, and the complete vehicle.
  • Complete NX Analysis for assigned components or subsystems and use results to guide design decisions, seeking support from the Design Lead Team or senior designers as needed.
  • Apply GD&T, tolerance awareness, variation-management, and stack-up principles to support fit, function, joining, load transfer, and assembly.
  • Design for manufacturability and assembly, considering process capability, tooling, fixturing, access, sequence, joining, weldability, inspection, repairability, and production variation.
  • Maintain accurate and traceable material, mass, specification, and related data within the math file.
  • Translate program and component requirements into clear design criteria, integration checks, verification expectations, and release deliverables.
  • Plan and execute work against design sync points, review milestones, release timing, and other Global Vehicle Development Process deliverables.
  • Deliver accurate, complete, and on-time math releases with clean CAD, correct interfaces, complete details, and minimal rework.
  • Use structured problem solving to resolve non-routine and moderately complex virtual integration issues.
  • Communicate design intent, load paths, integration risks, timing, decisions, and technical concerns clearly and proactively.
  • Track actions and issues through integration, analysis, reviews, release, build, validation, and verified closure.
  • Seek input early, support fellow designers, collaborate across functions, and share lessons learned and effective design practices.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of modeling methods, design reviews, checks, templates, workflows, and data quality.
