About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region Design, Engineering, and Construction Services, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1/2 Flex in Anchorage to help us Keep Alaska Moving! This position involves assisting with both the utility permit and utility relocation programs. At the Engineering Assistant 1 level, duties include evaluating utility permits, recommending modifications or approval based on safety and infrastructure integrity, and coordinating with local utility companies to resolve conflicts. Project assignments will consist of pavement preservation projects and other low complexity highway and aviation projects. At the Engineering Assistant 2 level, responsibilities include negotiating utility relocation agreements, facilitating physical relocation work during construction, working closely with construction teams and contractors, reviewing bills for accuracy, and finalizing project documentation. This level involves multiple projects of intermediate complexity. The Traffic, Safety, and Utilities Section within DOT&PF's Central Region manages traffic operations and facilitates utility relocation for highway and airport improvements, contributing to the mission of "Keep Alaska Moving."

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.
• An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
• One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
• Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
• A valid Driver's License is required.
• Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of engineering and their practical applications.

Nice To Haves

• Engineer-in-Training (Fundamentals of Engineering) Certification is preferred but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate utility permits and recommend modifications or approval based on maintaining the integrity of the road surface and surrounding drainage facilities and safety considerations to the traveling public.
• Coordinate with local utility companies to identify and resolve utility conflicts through the development of utility relocation agreements.
• Work with utility companies to negotiate utility relocation agreements.
• Facilitate the physical relocation work on-site during the construction season.
• Work closely with the DOT&PF construction team, the utility company's construction crew, and the highway contractor.
• Review bills for accuracy and finalize project documentation.
• Assess traffic safety concerns and coordinate the placement of utility infrastructure within the right-of-way.
