About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Statewide Public Facilities, is seeking an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex in Anchorage or Fairbanks. This position will perform routine architectural/engineering assignments or assist higher-level architects/engineers with a wide variety of activities. The work involves well-defined assignments or fragments of more complex projects and is reviewed regularly and upon completion. This position serves as part of a management team that oversees Statewide Public Facilities improvement projects through planning/scoping, design, and construction phases. The position functions as the Project Engineer overseeing construction projects of varying size and complexity under the supervision of a Project Manager. Responsibilities include monitoring construction activities, coordination with contractors and design professionals, scheduling and budgeting, preparation of project documentation and reports, and oversight of work performed by contractors. This position is based in Anchorage or Fairbanks, but project locations may vary, and temporary relocation to remote communities for the duration of a construction project can occur. This flex position allows for growth and increased responsibility as experience is obtained.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • May require occasional travel to project sites, including flying to remote communities in small aircraft with infrequent need for overnight stays with minimal accommodations.
  • Requires site inspections which may occur in adverse weather conditions.
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.
  • An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
  • One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level.
  • Cover Letter required, describing how applicant possesses position-specific competencies and how their skills will benefit the position (2-3 paragraphs, one page limit).
  • Copy of academic transcripts (unofficial okay, institution name/URL listed) if using education to verify minimum qualifications.
  • Copy of valid driver's license.
  • Three (3) professional references, including name, job title, and current phone numbers.

Nice To Haves

  • An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply.
  • Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1.
  • Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience.
