About The Position

This flex-position in our Preliminary Design and Environmental Services section offers a growth path from Engineering Assistant 3 through Engineering Associate to Engineer/Architect 1, giving you the opportunity to advance as you gain experience and licensure. The DOT&PF mission is to "Keep Alaska Moving", and your role in this position is directly tied to the most critical aspects of the mission. Alaska's roadways and airports are important resources that meet basic transportation needs and are critical to health and safety. They play a vital role in supporting our economy by serving communities throughout the state as well as the oil, gas, timber, commercial fishing, tourist, and other industries. You will collaborate with multiple functional groups within the Department, coordinate with staff from multiple areas of expertise, and assist with public and agency meetings to successfully construct capital improvement projects in Central Region, thereby delivering the Department's mission. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
  • Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level.
  • A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.
  • An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
  • Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering, land surveying or architecture, of which one year was as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.
  • Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect.
  • Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b).
  • Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

  • Transportation Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods applicable to planning, designing, and constructing of transportation systems including traffic analysis, signal analysis, highway capacity, pavement design, bridge construction, planning of transportation projects, environmental analysis of transportation facilities, and transportation network analysis.
  • Learning: Uses efficient learning techniques to acquire and apply new knowledge and skills; uses training, feedback, or other opportunities for self-learning and development.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Driver's License is preferred but not required.
  • Engineer-in-training certification is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Under the guidance of a registered professional engineer and lead consultant teams in solving real transportation engineering challenges—from developing design study reports and roadway geometrics to preparing drainage and accident analyses, cost estimates, and other essential project documents.
  • Take on a Senior Engineer role, guiding consultants in producing complete, bid-ready plans, specifications, and estimates for highway improvement projects.
  • Serve as a first-level registered professional engineer, supporting an Engineering Manager by reviewing designs for compliance with federal and state requirements, coordinating professional service contracts, and helping deliver high-quality plan sets for both state-funded and federal-aid projects.
