About The Position

General Dynamics Electric Boat’s Department 408, Life Cycle Engineering, develops Integrated Logistics Support products and maintains ship design requirements to maximize the operational availability of ships across their lifecycle. The organization contributes from early concept development and detail design through new construction and in-service support, helping support fleet readiness and modernization. The Engineer - Sustainment supports sustainment initiatives for the VIRGINIA Class and SSN(X) programs. Working with the VIRGINIA Sustainment Engineering team, the engineer advises submarine concept designs developed in the Teamcenter 3D model and helps influence designs to maximize platform operational availability and reduce total ownership costs to the Navy. As a member of the Design-Build-Sustain team, the engineer works with design and engineering disciplines, shipyard operations personnel, and downstream maintenance stakeholders. The role brings post-delivery maintenance and overhaul considerations into design discussions, sharing lessons learned from maintainers while balancing design requirements with fleet operational needs.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Engineering.
0–5 years of postgraduate engineering experience.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.
Open-minded approach to learning new concepts, critical thinking, and speaking with confidence.
Strong written, verbal, and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge in Mechanical, Ocean, Structural, Electrical, Materials, or Systems Engineering applications.
Entry-level awareness of specification requirements, maintainability principles, failure-history research, and interpreting drawings and diagrams.

Responsibilities

Develop an understanding of ship specifications and desktop guides, and build proficiency with resources including the Class Maintenance Plan (CMP), Planned Maintenance System (PMS) Viewer, and Open Architectural Retrieval System (OARS) 3M system.
Support task leads on applicable VIRGINIA and SSN(X) projects and deliverables.
Perform entry-level assessments of ship systems and component designs for maintenance, accessibility, reliability, lifting and handling needs, and life-cycle costs to support trade studies.
Build proficiency with NX Teamcenter to support major area team reviews and working-level meetings with Design & Engineering.
Participate in regular training with technical leads to increase knowledge of ship operations underway, in port, and during dry-docking periods.
Participate in periodic industrial-area walkthroughs of the shipyard and submarines under construction to develop deck-plate awareness.
Interface with design and engineering disciplines, shipyard operations personnel, and downstream maintenance stakeholders, bringing post-delivery maintenance and overhaul considerations into design decisions.
