About The Position

Toyota’s Powertrain Design (PDE) team is looking for a passionate, highly-motivated Design Engineer with an interest in Driveline systems to help develop a multitude of torque transferring components. Within the first two years, the primary responsibilities of this role are to support the design of Driveline components for all vehicle types, including Electrified Powertrains. This role involves collaborating with stakeholders such as suppliers, Purchasing, Toyota manufacturing plants, Vehicle Design groups, and Toyota Japan through simultaneous engineering, issuing Toyota owned drawings and/or supplied parts specifications, supporting trials, ensuring smooth product/vehicle launches, and working with customer-facing groups to ensure no issues for customer vehicles. The engineer will also work with North America Manufacturing Centers and local NA suppliers to improve driveline quality by identifying customer issues, investigating root causes, and implementing counter-measures. The role supports the PDE department's objective to build “World Class Powertrains in North America.”

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (or above) with a Mechanical Engineering or related technical disciplines.
  • Minimum of 3+ years in automotive design/development (co-op/internships will be considered).
  • Detailed knowledge of Transfer Case design, Evaluation, Spec setting, etc.
  • Experience utilizing CAD tools and applying GD&T to support product design and manufacturability.
  • Experience in the detailed design and release of prototype and production component drawings and supplier spec sheets.
  • Knowledge of typical automotive manufacturing methods (i.e. Aluminum and Iron Castings, Forgings, Machining, Thermoplastics, and Rubber Molding).
  • Experience with a level of proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong knowledge of conventional, hybrid and electrified drivelines.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% periodically and during peak periods.
  • Must have the right to work in the United States and not require Toyota support or sponsorship for immigration-related employment now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with driveline/powertrain assemblies.
  • Detailed knowledge Propeller Shafts, Driveshafts, and Differentials.
  • Experience with Catia, FEA, Vehicle NVH, and Vehicle Simulations.
  • Working knowledge of Design Review by Failure Mode (DRBFM).
  • A working knowledge of Quality Management and Supply Chain Management principles.
  • Team-oriented thinking and a “can-do” attitude.
  • Toyota TBP panel – Pass.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design of Driveline components for all vehicle types, including Electrified Powertrains.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, such as suppliers, Purchasing, Toyota manufacturing plants, Vehicle Design groups, and Toyota Japan.
  • Engage in simultaneous engineering with potential suppliers, including visits to their manufacturing plants.
  • Issue Toyota owned drawings and/or supplied parts specifications.
  • Work with Suppliers and Vehicle Plants to support trials and ensure a smooth product/vehicle launch.
  • Work with customer facing groups to ensure no issues for customer vehicles.
  • Work with North America Manufacturing Centers and local NA suppliers to improve driveline quality by identifying customer issues, investigating root causes, and implementing counter-measures.
  • Investigate how to make the driveline system while maintaining quality.
  • Create validated 3D models, 2D drawings, and supplier spec sheets utilizing the standard design process.
  • Lead Design Reviews for responsible parts to show how the design achieves its function and targets.
  • Develop counter-measures to gaps such as cost, mass, durability, strength, and warranty rate based on data and engineering mindset.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders (such as vehicle design, TMC driveline design, Supplier Development teams, purchasing, and assembly plants).
  • Manage NA suppliers to ensure on-time delivery of quality parts in line with the requirements of each Toyota milestone.
  • Improve PDE’s design process capability to improve quality and on-time delivery.
  • Benchmark similar designs to improve customer experience and cost.
  • Training in the Toyota Way.
