Engineer IV (Senior) – Piping Systems Design

BLUE ORIGIN•Huntsville, AL
•$145,188 - $203,263

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin’s Engines business unit, which designs, develops, manufactures, and tests engines and propulsion systems. The engineer will lead the design and development of ground-based fluid piping systems for a development program and own those systems throughout their complete product life cycle, from initial definition through operation. Responsibilities span design, analysis, manufacturing, commissioning, data review, maintenance, and operational support. Hardware includes high-pressure piping, storage and distribution systems, pneumatics, and other ancillary systems needed to operate a novel architecture. The role calls for strong fluid-system design expertise and familiarity with applicable codes and regulations. Travel to Blue Origin sites is required, up to 20%, to support development, maintenance, and operations.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in engineering; Mechanical, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering is desired.
  • At least 7 years of professional experience with pressurized piping systems in a similar sector, such as aerospace, petrochemical, oil and gas, power, or shipbuilding.
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and constructing pressurized piping system architectures.
  • Strong technical fundamentals.
  • In-depth knowledge of fluid-system components, including valves, regulators, pumps, flange types, hydraulic systems, actuators, fittings, and fasteners.
  • Proficiency in fluid-system sizing calculations, layout, component and material selection, developing concepts of operation, and defining maintenance.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry standards and construction codes, including ASME B31.3 and the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC).
  • Experience supporting on-site construction and commissioning.
  • Experience generating piping and instrumentation documents (P&IDs).
  • Experience guiding and mentoring early-career engineers.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to an inclusive culture.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. degree in an engineering subject area or higher.
  • At least 10 years of proven experience in a similar sector, such as aerospace, petrochemical, oil and gas, power, or shipbuilding.
  • Experience deploying AI tools to automate repetitive analysis.
  • Experience developing test equipment and/or performing test campaigns.
  • Strong system-safety fundamentals and experience with analysis methods such as HAZOP, FMECA, and FMEA.
  • Proficiency with hydraulic modeling tools such as AFT Fathom/Arrow or HYSYS.
  • Proficiency in pipe-stress analysis and associated tools such as Autopipe or CAESAR.
  • Experience with structural finite-element analysis tools such as ANSYS or FE/Pipe.

Responsibilities

  • Take technical ownership of sophisticated fluid and pneumatic systems.
  • Develop and analyze high-pressure piping system architectures, perform design trades, and develop requirements and interfaces.
  • Generate component specifications and work with Supply Chain to support cost- and schedule-effective sourcing.
  • Peer review analyses.
  • Coach and develop junior engineers.
  • Work with the operations team to fabricate, install, commission, and operate fluid systems.
  • Ensure operations and maintenance activities are consistent with design intent and defined requirements.
  • Collaborate with technical designers and configuration managers to establish product structures and configuration control for owned subsystems.
  • Travel up to 20% to other Blue Origin sites.
