Engineer III – Piping Systems and Stress Design

BLUE ORIGIN•Huntsville, AL
•$121,023 - $169,432

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin’s Engines business unit, which designs, develops, manufactures, and tests engines and propulsion systems. The Engineer III will design and develop ground-based fluid piping systems for a development program and own those systems throughout their product life cycle, from initial definition through operation. Work spans design, analysis, manufacturing, test support, data review, and maintenance, with emphasis on piping stress analysis across large thermal gradients. Hardware includes high-pressure storage and distribution systems, pneumatics, and other ancillary systems needed to operate a novel architecture. The role requires technical knowledge of fluid design and construction to applicable codes and regulations, and travel to Blue Origin sites to support development, maintenance, and operations. Relocation is provided, travel is expected up to 20% of the time, and interviews include a technical assessment.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering; Mechanical, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering is desired.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in a similar sector, such as aerospace, petrochemical, or power.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design and development of pressurized piping system architectures.
  • Strong technical fundamentals.
  • Proficiency in pipe stress analysis and associated tools such as AutoPIPE or CAESAR.
  • Experience with fluid-system sizing calculations, layout, component and material selection, and deriving concepts of operations.
  • Experience with hydraulic modeling tools such as AFT Fathom/Arrow or HYSYS.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry standards, including ASME B31.3 and the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC).
  • Experience generating plumbing and instrumentation documents (P&IDs).
  • Experience guiding and mentoring less experienced engineers.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to an inclusive culture.

  • Experience supporting on-site construction and commissioning.
  • Experience deploying AI tools to automate repetitive analysis.
  • Strong system safety fundamentals.
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) tools.
  • Experience with structural finite element analysis tools such as ANSYS or FE/Pipe.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical ownership of fluid subsystems.
  • Perform stress analysis for complex pressurized piping systems across large thermal gradients.
  • Derive support loads and coordinate support schemes with civil and structural engineers.
  • Work with internal and external production organizations to resolve manufacturing and procurement challenges for fluid systems.
