About The Position

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) is seeking an electrical engineering student for an Engineer Intern position in the System Protection Engineering Department. This internship is for the Summer 2027 session, running from May through August. The intern will work alongside experienced engineering staff in Columbus, Nebraska, assisting with various protection and controls/automation duties. This role is specifically for undergraduate students who have completed at least their sophomore year of college.

Requirements

• Pursuing an electrical engineering degree from an accredited college/university
• Must be finishing their sophomore year of college at a minimum
• Available to work through the 2027 summer session (May through August 2027)
• Undergraduate student only

Responsibilities

• Assisting with specifying appropriate protection schemes
• Making relay recommendations
• Performing calculations to support relay settings
• Developing trip-checking procedures
• Calculating ground potential rise
• Calculating available fault current
• Locating faults
• Analyzing system disturbances
• Providing operational support for protection duties
• Assisting with automated substations
• Assisting with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming
• Assisting with Human Machine Interface (HMI) development and programming
• Assisting with intra-substation communication and networking
• Assisting with control panels, electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
• Assisting with equipment procurement, startup, and operations support
• Performing other duties as assigned
