About The Position

This position is responsible for assisting the Division Traffic Engineer in managing Traffic Services operations in Division Four. Performs advanced engineering safety and capacity analysis. Provides engineering technical assistance. Assists in the development, management and construction of all traffic contracts. Responds to inquiries from the public, DOT management and news media, etc. regarding traffic projects, safety concerns, capacity issues and proposed work. This position will perform professional level engineering analysis for, but not be limited to, capacity analysis, evaluation for need for various signs and pavement markings as provided for in the MUTCD, speed limit evaluations and safety and crash studies. Background in Traffic Engineering and experience with NCDOT Traffic Engineering policies and procedures. This position will be staffed in the Wilson Traffic Services Department in Wilson. This position requires the ability to independently perform engineering analyses and make engineering decisions based on the results of those analyses. The employee must have the ability to maintain multiple projects and complete difficult assignments within specified time requirements. The employee must be able to direct the work of other engineers and technicians, applying engineering principles to difficult or complex engineering problems, and make sound recommendations and decisions. The employee must have the ability to communicate well both orally and in written form.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Background in Traffic Engineering.
  • Experience with NCDOT Traffic Engineering policies and procedures.
  • Ability to independently perform engineering analyses and make engineering decisions based on the results of those analyses.
  • Ability to maintain multiple projects and complete difficult assignments within specified time requirements.
  • Ability to direct the work of other engineers and technicians, applying engineering principles to difficult or complex engineering problems, and make sound recommendations and decisions.
  • Ability to communicate well both orally and in written form.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts, practices and theories used in Traffic Engineering.
  • Experience completing work and projects independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in performing engineering safety and/or capacity analysis and decision making based on the results of those analysis.
  • Experience supervising, motivating, counseling, and training other personnel.
  • Experience collaborating with others in finding solutions to controversial or sensitive matters that may establish precedents.
  • Experience reviewing engineered plans and details to determine compliance and compatibility with traffic and engineering principles.
