The Global Technical Services organization at Collins Aerospace is seeking a Drafting Designer to join our Mechanical Computer-Aided Design (MCAD) team. We are looking for a team player with strong initiative and the ability to thrive in an environment of rapidly shifting priorities designing complex aerospace products. As a Designer in our MCAD group, you will work directly with engineering staff to produce 3D models and 2D layout drawings of the product to meet both engineering and customer requirements. The individual in this role will be responsible for preparing a variety of engineering models and drawings, revising drawings, and maintaining assembly parts lists. The selected candidate must be competent in aspects of mechanical engineering drawings depicting details, assemblies and outlines. Experience with industry specifications and in-depth knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) is used to ensure all drawings are complete (accurate, fully dimensioned and in alignment with tolerance stack-up analyses). You will also work closely with our detailing team, guiding and mentoring them to ensure drawing accuracy and organization, the proper usage of GD&T, the proper usage of standard features, manufacturing methodology and standard library information. This position is Hybrid at our facility in Rockford Illinois.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain U.S. Secret government issued security clearance
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and ANSI Y14.5M standards, along with working proficiency in drafting practices, PLM tools, and general computer applications.
  • Proven experience in 3D mechanical design and drafting, including the development of complex assemblies.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and manufacturing principles, with demonstrated ability to read and interpret models, assembly drawings, and detailed part prints.
  • Proficiency with Siemens NX and Teamcenter, particularly in design of rotating machines.
  • Experience with additional CAD platforms is also beneficial.
  • Manufacturing background and experience are highly valued.
  • Familiarity with Model‑Based Definition (MBD) and Additive Manufacturing is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Work with engineering for initial 2D concept of product
  • Create 3D product models, outlines, and layout
  • Create solid model piece parts and housings in NX, support the move towards Model-Based Definition, direct to manufacture
  • Apply tolerance stack-up analysis results to ensure correct fit and alignment, and performance of complex assemblies
  • Create assemblies in NX and manage the Bill of Materials
  • Create dimensioned detail component drawings for high complexity piece parts
  • Lead detailing drafters in the completion of component drawings for a design project
  • Check drawings for accuracy, correct GD&T, and compliance to company / industry standards
  • Support interface with the Structures group to ensure that they have the necessary physical product definition to perform stress, thermal and dynamic analyses as required and as directed by engineering
  • Ensure proper filing, control, and export classification of created design data
  • Drafting Designers are expected to interface directly with Collins’ engineering teams in the design and development of products.
  • They may also be required to coordinate and communicate with engineering, design, or drafting teams from other Collins divisions worldwide.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a global workforce are essential.
  • Candidates must be able to perform well in a team environment and accurately interpret and implement both oral and written instructions.
