Engineer I

Barnes•,

About The Position

Barnes Aerospace is seeking an Engineer I (described in the posting as a Repair Engineer) to join the Jet AirWerks team. This hands-on role develops and maintains aircraft engine component repair processes, evaluates repair feasibility, and provides production-floor support. It supports shop-floor troubleshooting, coordination with major aerospace OEM customers, and compliance with safety and quality requirements. Under the direction of the Engineering Manager, the engineer supports repair-development work from opportunity assessment through production release. The work includes assessing component condition and repair options, developing and validating repair sequences, maintaining controlled technical documentation, and partnering with Operations and Quality on trials, training, readiness, transfers, and improvement projects. The role requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline and at least one year of relevant gas turbine component repair or manufacturing experience; relevant internship or co-op experience is considered. Applicants must have unrestricted authorization to work in the USA and undergo FAA-mandated pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and ongoing random testing. Employment may also be contingent on export-control eligibility or the employer obtaining a required export license.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of relevant gas turbine component repair or manufacturing experience; relevant internship or co-op experience will be considered.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, manufacturing, industrial, aerospace, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, basic GD&T, work instructions, and inspection requirements.
  • Strong written communication, organized problem-solving, and a collaborative shop-floor orientation.
  • Familiarity with industry specifications, processes, and materials.
  • Experience writing technical publications and repairs, and designing alternate repair processes to achieve stated goals.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both in a team environment and independently.
  • Unrestricted authorization to work in the USA.
  • Must complete FAA-mandated pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and ongoing random testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of machining methods such as lathe, mill, and EDM; fixturing; heat treatment; welding; brazing; and APS coating.
  • Experience with 3-axis CNC programming, machining setup, CAM, or precision machining; preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily shop-floor support under the Engineering Manager; gather facts, troubleshoot process, tooling, equipment, and inspection issues, and escalate risks appropriately.
  • Support repair-development work packages from opportunity assessment through production release, including scope, schedule, risk, resource, and technical deliverables.
  • Evaluate part condition, damage modes, repairability, dimensional restoration needs, and potential life or performance risks; define repair concepts and recommend an appropriate technical and commercial path.
  • Develop and validate repair sequences that may include cleaning or stripping, inspection, blending, machining, joining, coating, heat treatment, non-destructive testing, dimensional restoration, and final inspection.
  • Maintain repair routings, work instructions, standard work, fixtures, and controlled documentation.
  • Use basic data and structured methods such as 5 Why, 8D, and PFMEA to support root-cause and corrective-action work.
  • Partner with Operations and Quality on process trials, operator training, readiness reviews, repair transfers, and improvement projects to improve safety, quality, yield, turnaround time, and capacity.
  • Coordinate with major aerospace OEM customers and ensure repairs meet safety and quality requirements.
