About The Position
The primary purpose of the Engineer I position is to design customized engineering solutions that allow individuals with significant disabilities to meet their rehabilitation goals in order to achieve gainful employment and/or increased independence in the community. The Engineer I works directly with individuals with severe disabilities who are referred to them by either an Independent Living or a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. This Rehabilitation Engineer position is located in the Asheville VR/IL Unit and will provide services in the surrounding counties.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Driver's license required due to extensive travel within the region.

- Knowledge of/or experience producing written reports, recommendations, and plans
- Professional communication and collaboration skills necessary to accomplish goals with internal and external partners
- Knowledge of disabilities and related functional barriers
- May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
Responsibilities
- Collaborating and communicating with stakeholders such as Vocational Rehabilitation and Independent Living Counselors, individuals with disabilities, vendors, and contractors.
- Conducting site visits to consumers' homes, schools, and/or worksites to assess barriers and determine engineering needs.
- Documenting recommendations and specifications for safe and cost-effective engineering solutions that may include adaptive equipment and devices, assistive technology, residence and vehicle modifications, and worksite modifications/accommodations.
- Maintaining current knowledge of rehabilitation engineering related best practices, products, services, and vendors.
- Providing technical assistance for internal team and interagency projects when requested.
