About The Position

This is a full-time, exempt position with full benefits. The Engineer I will be responsible for preparing plans and specifications for highway projects, inspecting construction projects for compliance, and coordinating highway construction projects. This role involves providing technical guidance to lower-level staff, monitoring compliance with plan specifications, and assisting in directing surveys. The position requires the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software for creating geometric layouts and drafting project plans, as well as conducting compliance surveys for subdivision roadways. The Engineer I will also create roadway design data for field construction surveys, review and utilize various engineering reports, and communicate design data with external firms and contractors. Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of County policies, procedures, and ordinances related to roadways and transportation is crucial, as is effective communication with County stakeholders. The role also requires staying current with CAD software used for engineering design and projected drafting. Other duties as required and assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.
  • Registered as an Engineer-in-training with the North Dakota State Board of Regulations for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
  • Must have the ability to prepare, interpret, and utilized civil engineering plans, maps, specifications, and reports.
  • Must have advance proficiency using Computer Aided Design software including Autodesk Civil 3D for project design.
  • Must have knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety precautions of road work.
  • Must possess a valid Class D North Dakota driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills and be able to interact with fellow employees, professional staff, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares plans and specifications for highway projects.
  • Inspects construction projects to ensure compliance with plans and regulations.
  • Coordinates highway construction projects which include providing technical guidance to lower-level staff and monitoring compliance with plan specifications.
  • Assists in directing preliminary and location surveys.
  • Uses Computer Aided Design software to create geometric layouts and draft project plans.
  • Conducts compliance surveys of subdivision roadways to ensure all newly adopted roadways meet county roadway standards.
  • Creates roadway design data for field construction surveys.
  • Reviews and utilizes hydraulic, transportation, geotechnical, and environmental engineering reports for use in project planning and design.
  • Communicates and coordinates roadway design data with engineering firms and contractors for use in planning, design, and construction.
  • Keeps up to date on County policies, procedures, and ordinances concerning County roadways and transportation.
  • Communicates with County stakeholders to foster relationships and ensure all policies, procedures, and ordinances concerning County roadways and transportation are implemented effectively.
  • Maintains, updates, and stays current on all Computer Aided Design software used for engineering design, and projected drafting.
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned.
