About The Position

ABS Government Engineering Services (GES) is looking for a Senior Engineer I to assist with ship Electrical and Automation system drawing reviews The person will conduct engineering design reviews and analysis assignments involving a major project or several smaller or less complex projects for US Government Navy, MARAD projects. These projects by nature of their complexity and difficulty require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or scientific field. Project work and assignments may be broad in nature requiring ingenuity and cross functional coordination. Individual will support U.S. government agencies (US Navy, US Military Sealift Command (MSC), US Coast Guard, MARAD, NOAA, etc.) by performing various classification and certification services for surface vessels. The successful candidate will work in person at ABS Office in Spring, Texas. This position will be a Hybrid role in Spring, Texas (Remote Monday and Friday, in Office Tuesday - Thursday).

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or other related disciplines; an M.S. may be preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) to eight (5) years of experience working in relevant military or government vessel experience, and be familiar with Ship Electrical and automation systems.
  • Engineering experience in a shipyard, NAVSEA, USCG, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society is preferred.
  • Applicant must be a U.S. Person with the ability to obtain and maintain Secret Clearance successfully.
  • Should have advanced practical industry-related experience.
  • Knowledge of related technical disciplines, including military or government vessel experience and familiarity with Marine Electrical and automation system design and verification.
  • Knowledge of applicable Rules and Regulations and the impact of Rule applications and interpretations.
  • Knowledge of USCG requirements and familiarity with SOLAS and MARPOL are desired.
  • Knowledge of company business policies and procedures.
  • The human relations skills necessary to maintain positive client contacts and provide leadership and motivation to subordinate staff and peers.
  • Candidate must possess excellent technical, interpersonal, communication, and writing skills. A client service mindset is required.
  • Candidate must possess the ability to multitask and work well in a team environment, but also have the focus and discipline to work independently.
  • Candidate should have a meticulous and detail-oriented demeanor with a desire to work in a design review capacity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and solve complex or unique engineering problems.
  • Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
  • A working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems (internal candidates only).

  • Professional or chartered engineer license.

Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of an experienced engineer or engineering manager, performs detailed engineering review of plans assigned for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations, and contract commitments.
  • Performs work that involves conventional engineering practices but may include moderately complex problems such as the resolution of conflicting design requirements, material standards or coordination of activities among other disciplines.
  • Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of technical responsibility.
  • Drafts technically accurate and timely reports, and responses to client letters, and other forms of communication for review by an experienced engineer or engineering manager.
  • Prepare accurate and timely weekly reports and billing on all work performed.
  • Communicate the status of the current workload to all appropriate members of the team to ensure the needs of the clients will be met.
  • Liaise with flag administration for technical interpretations, equivalencies, or exemptions.
  • May propose technical advice to field operations and other technical offices.
  • May propose new approaches to problems encountered and make recommendations for changes in methods, procedures, or designs.
  • May work directly with clients to identify and resolve problems in technical expertise.
  • Works as a team member within the group. May work autonomously, once trained, with minimal supervision.
  • Implements and maintains ABS Quality System requirements relative to responsibilities after undergoing ABS Quality System training.
