About The Position

The Special Technologies Laboratory (STL) in Santa Barbara, California, is seeking a Casual Engineer I to support direct-customer national security activities. The engineer will work with senior scientists, senior mechanical engineers, and technologists to plan scientific experiments and field campaigns; support field programs and designs using established principles and practices; and contribute to designs, strategies, reports, and technical proposals. The role also follows established engineering and technical procedures, assists with procurement specifications and purchase requests, and may perform other duties assigned by Management. The primary work location is STL in Santa Barbara, California. The position is casual and limited to a maximum of 900 hours per calendar year. A flexible work schedule may be negotiated with the manager, with possible 5/8, 9/80, or 4/10 work weeks. Travel for field deployments of remote sensing sensors and infrastructure is required. Employment requires a pre-placement physical examination including a drug screen, and MSTS conducts pre-employment drug testing and background reviews. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship and being at least 18 years old. The selected applicant will undergo a federal background investigation and subsequent reinvestigations, and may need to complete a counterintelligence evaluation, potentially including a polygraph examination. A valid driver’s license is required.

  • Skill-building experience demonstrating either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
  • Ability to interpret codes and standards applicable to the position.
  • Valid driver’s license.
