About The Position

The Engineer I/II assigned to Traffic is responsible for performing professional and technical traffic engineering work and provide staff assistance to higher-level engineering staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or Engineer in Training Certification, plus two years of post-graduate engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Engineer-In-Training Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and reviews traffic engineering plans, construction plans, specifications, contracts, documents, and technical and engineering reports; reviews changes to construction to determine feasibility of proposed alternative design; recommends approval or denial of plans/revisions and/or recommends alternations prior to continuation of construction.
  • Responds to requests for information and concerns from citizens, contractors, developers, engineers, permit companies, City departments, and/or other interested parties related to engineering, traffic, and/or City codes and standards at the service counter and/or over the phone; investigates complaints concerning construction projects, traffic, or other related engineering issues.
  • Prepares and/or reviews a variety of engineering reports to verify design calculations and provide recommendations; prepares correspondence related to projects; reviews construction material submittals, and/or other related information to ensure conformance with applicable state and local specifications and codes.
  • Prepares staff reports and resolutions for the Traffic and Safety Commission, City Council, and other City departments.
  • Represents the Department, City, and/or District by attending meetings, public events, and speaking engagements; attends staff meetings, committee meetings, and/or other related meetings; serves as a liaison with external agencies.
  • Performs field investigations in response to citizen complaints related to construction, drainage, traffic, and/or future developments; and analyzes development projects in relation to new and/or existing traffic engineering improvement and signals.
  • Prepares engineering conditions of approval on proposed development projects.
  • Reviews and recommends approval of construction changes and change orders.
  • Prepares, reviews and participates in the selection process for Requests for Proposals and Requests for Qualifications.
  • Prepares or directs technical traffic engineering reports.
  • Performs various duties for capital improvement projects, including monitoring budgets, estimating material quantities and costs; conducting preliminary design studies; and checking plans, specifications and cost estimates.
  • Inspects construction projects and providing recommendations to resolve problems.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
