POSITION CONCEPT Provides engineering and operations support for the Engineering, Construction, and Project management (ECPM) department which focuses on major capital projects within Electric Delivery (ED). This position will mainly support distribution design efforts but will also support both Transmission and Substation engineering needs. This position is responsible for both performing engineering work directly and offering engineering oversight to contractors performing engineering tasks on behalf of Tampa Electric. Ensures that all engineering deliverables meet TEC standards, coordinates with contractors to clarify requirements, and verify the quality and compliance of contractor work.

Requirements

  • To qualify as a co-op student, enrollment in the university’s co-op program (proof of enrollment required); if not eligible for co-op program (or program unavailable), the student will be considered an intern.
  • Education: The successful applicant should be enrolled in an accredited university as a college undergraduate or a graduate level post-secondary educational program in a related discipline for the first semester the student joins the program.

Nice To Haves

  • Enrolled in a Mechanical , Civil, or Electrical Engineering degree Track
  • The ability to calculate forces acting on structures and equipment, resolve geometric and trigonometric problems to calculate geographical position and direction of forces.
  • Must be able to work independently on complex assignments involving a wide variety of situations requiring sound judgment.
  • Familiarity with computer-based design (CAD) tools.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both through oral communication and formal written correspondence.

Responsibilities

  • In support of projects from various sources including TEC energy delivery system expansion, governmental agencies, developers, and private entities.
  • The Engineer is responsible for providing engineering, estimating, programming, and mapping input for, both by performing these tasks directly and by overseeing and guiding contractors executing these activities on behalf of Tampa Electric.
  • This includes reviewing contractor work to ensure it meets TEC standards and providing clarification or direction as needed.
  • Engineer and design facilities that are safe, economical, and adhere to accepted engineering practice and standards.
  • Using design software, prepare and issue all associated design drawings, specifications and bills of material in a professional and thorough design package.
  • Represent and coordinate projects within Electric Delivery’s Project Management process, acting as a liaison between internal teams and contractors.
  • Oversee the progress and technical quality of contractor work to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Evaluate and select materials, providing expertise in the procurement process.
  • Collaborate with contractors on material selection, monitor equipment delivery, ensure proper project accounting, and verify the accuracy of manufacturers’ drawings.
  • Provide engineering support to operating departments during field activities including field data collection, construction, and closeout.
  • Interpret engineering designs during construction, facilitate communication between internal teams and contractors, and gather feedback for future design improvements.
