About The Position

At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), we plan, build, maintain, and protect the transportation systems that connect communities, support commerce, and keep Louisiana moving. DOTD is seeking an experienced engineer to serve as the Assistant to the Project Engineer expert while supervising lower-level Engineers or Engineering Technicians. This position supports transportation projects and programs through supervising highway and bridge construction, surveying activities, contract administration, quality assurance, material management and associated functions of a construction unit including supervising employees in the Project Engineer’s office engaged in construction work. This role plays a critical part in advancing DOTD’s mission by supporting the development, delivery, maintenance, or improvement of transportation infrastructure by applying engineering principles, conducting technical analysis, coordinating projects, and conducting compliance-related reviews. Professional license to practice engineering is required — training is provided with opportunities for career advancement. This position is located in Terrebonne Parish and reports to the Project Engineer.

Requirements

  • Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering plus one of the following: Two years of licensed engineering experience; or Six years of professional engineering experience.
  • Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. If one of those applicants is selected for the position, he/she will be required to obtain a Louisiana license prior to appointment.
  • The hiring agency will verify that all licensing requirements are met.
  • Louisiana Professional Engineer licenses are issued by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board.

Nice To Haves

  • A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of professional engineering experience.
  • A doctorate degree in engineering will substitute for two years of professional engineering experience.
  • Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of professional engineering experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Engineer 7 in directing and supervising highway and bridge construction, survey activities, contract administration and associated functions of a construction unit.
  • Assist the Project /Engineer in review of plans, directs, and coordinates construction inspection, contract administration, sampling, testing, surveying, and documentation activities for assigned construction projects.
  • Supervises and trains engineers and engineering technicians assigned to construction projects, including day, night, or emergency operations as needed.
  • Reviews and approves construction documentation, quantities, daily diaries, test reports, estimates, correspondence, and other project records.
  • Coordinates with contractors, consultants, utility companies, public officials, and internal DOTD staff to resolve project issues and maintain progress.
  • Reviews project schedules, plan changes, construction problems, erosion control plans, utility relocations, change orders, and contract compliance issues.
  • Ensures construction work is performed in accordance with plans, specifications, special provisions, DOTD policies, and applicable federal and state requirements.
