Roehrborn, Can J Urol 2017 Position SummaryWe are seeking a Engineer 2 Design Development, R&D - Biomaterials for a hands-on experimental role to support the development and characterization of hydrogel-based materials. This role will encompass the design and execution of experimental studies to evaluate the mechanical and imaging visibility properties. The ideal candidate enjoys working in the laboratory, building new experimental methods and solving open-ended technical problems. This role sits within a small, fast-moving R&D team offering the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to early-stage product development while gaining exposure to regulated device development environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (in Material science, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or related major) and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree with no experience.
  • Hands-on experience designing and executing experimental test methods and analyzing resulting data
  • Strong documentation skills, with ability to draft protocols and technical reports.
  • Comfort working in early-stage R&D environments with evolving test methods.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with viscoelastic materials characterization such as rheology or mechanical testing of soft materials, particularly hydrogels
  • Familiarity with medical imaging modalities, (CT, MRI, ultrasound)
  • Experience working with DICOM imaging datasets and image analysis tools
  • Experience with CAD (Solidworks)
  • Exposure to medical device development or regulated environments

Responsibilities

  • Design and execution of test methods to characterize mechanical and imaging properties soft biomaterials
  • Perform sample preparation, reconstitution, handling and controlled testing of NASHA (non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid) based gels
  • Analysis of imaging (e.g. DICOM) and other datasets to quantify geometry, positioning and stability of materials
  • Support identification and implementation of tools and software workflows
  • Design and build novel experimental setups, test fixtures or tissue-mimicking models as needed
  • Document experimental protocols, results and conclusions to support internal design decisions, device history record and regulatory submissions
  • Work cross-functionally with medical physicists, QA/RA, marketing and manufacturing partners to align testing with user and product requirements
  • Contribute to design controls and risk management under ISO 13485 and ISO 14971.
