About The Position

Join Golden Valley Electric Association as an Energy Management Specialist and help shape the future of energy use across Interior Alaska. If you're passionate about energy efficiency, emerging technologies, and helping people make informed energy decisions, this is an opportunity to combine technical expertise with meaningful community impact. As part of our Grid Modernization team, you'll work directly with residential and commercial members, support innovative energy programs, and contribute to initiatives involving demand response, beneficial electrification, renewable energy, and distributed generation. The position offers a competitive starting pay rate of $33.64 per hour (Grade 9), depending on qualifications and experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited program (preferred) in Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Community Planning, Business Development, or a related field. OR Associate degree in a related field plus two years of relevant energy systems or energy auditing experience. OR Five years of relevant electric utility work experience.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license.
  • Energy Manager In Training (EMIT), Energy Efficiency Practitioner (EEP), or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Experience with or knowledge of: Energy efficiency and energy use principles.
  • Customer service and technical support.
  • Solar energy systems.
  • HVAC systems.
  • Heat pumps.
  • Electric motors and lighting systems.
  • Building electrical systems.
  • Construction processes and practices.
  • Load management and demand response technologies.
  • Distributed generation and renewable energy.
  • Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Customer management and energy analysis software (NISC experience is a plus).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation abilities.
  • Effective project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborative mindset with a commitment to exceptional member service.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct energy use evaluations and recommend efficiency improvements.
  • Assist members in understanding electric rates, billing, and energy consumption.
  • Promote beneficial electrification technologies such as electric vehicle charging and heat pumps.
  • Support programs involving demand-side management, demand response, net metering, community solar, and small-scale renewable energy.
  • Participate in community outreach through presentations, educational events, and digital content.
  • Analyze industry trends and recommend improvements to GVEA's energy programs.
  • Support long-range planning, load forecasting, and strategic initiatives that improve system efficiency.
  • Help identify grant and funding opportunities that expand energy efficiency programs throughout our service area.
