About The Position

The Endoscopy Technician provides equipment, specimen handling, and other technical support to assist physicians in performing general endoscopy procedures. This role is responsible for room setup prior to procedures and cleanup following procedures. The Endoscopy Technician works under the direction and supervision of the MD or RN, assisting the physician in the performance of patient general endoscopic procedures according to established standards. This includes providing appropriate supplies, equipment, and instrumentation, and following physician’s instructions for performing required patient diagnostic procedures. The technician obtains various specimens from patients, safely handles, documents, and places them in appropriate containers/solutions. They verify required pictures have been taken by the physician, set up the procedure room by identifying and selecting necessary equipment, supplies, and instrumentation, and input appropriate patient data into the endoscopic information system. Post-procedure, the technician cleans the room, performs gross decontamination of instruments, transports instrumentation to the decontamination room, and wipes down work areas according to aseptic procedures. They also transport non-controlled medications, care for and handle instruments and equipment cost-effectively, inspect and maintain instrumentation for safety and effectiveness, and chart maintenance records. The role involves drawing up medications and labeling syringes under supervision, assisting in procedure room turnover, transporting patients, assisting with patient transfers, and supporting the anesthesiologist with airway management supplies. Additionally, the technician is responsible for intraoperative documentation in EPIC, including staff times, event times, and supplies used, and may perform Patient Care Tech duties as required. Adherence to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures is expected.

Requirements

  • Four years of High School education.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Minimum of six months experience working in a patient care setting required.

Nice To Haves

  • CNA, EMT, MA or Surgical Tech certification.
  • Current enrollment in an accredited Nursing Program.

Responsibilities

  • Provides equipment, specimen handling, and other technical support to assist physicians in performing general endoscopy procedures.
  • Responsible for room set up prior to procedures and clean up following procedures.
  • Assists the physician in the performance of patient general endoscopic procedures according to established standards.
  • Provides all appropriate supplies, equipment, and instrumentation.
  • Follows physician’s instructions for performing all required patient diagnostic procedures utilizing appropriate instrumentation.
  • Obtains various specimens from patients.
  • Safely handles, documents, and places specimens in appropriate containers/solutions per standards.
  • Verifies required pictures have been taken by physician.
  • Sets up procedure room; identifies and selects the equipment, supplies, and instrumentation required for each procedure.
  • Inputs appropriate patient data in endoscopic information system.
  • Cleans procedure room upon the completion of procedures; performs gross decontamination of instruments; transports instrumentation to the proper decontamination room; wipes down counters and other work areas according to proper ascetic procedures.
  • Transports medications, which are not controlled substances.
  • Properly cares for and handles instruments and equipment; uses and maintains instrument and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
  • Inspects and cares for instrumentation and equipment to ensure their safety and effectiveness.
  • Charts instrument and equipment maintenance records and sends damaged equipment out for repair.
  • Draws up medications and labels syringes under the supervision of the MD or RN.
  • Assists in procedure room turnover ensuring accurate identification of patient.
  • Transports patient to correct procedure room and from various areas of the hospital.
  • Assists in the lifting and/or transferring of patients to and from exam tables, wheelchairs, carts, and beds.
  • Assists anesthesiologist with obtaining necessary supplies to manage patient airway.
  • Responsible for intraoperative documentation into EPIC which includes documenting in and out times of intraoperative staff, recording event times and supplies used.
  • Performs the duties of the Patient Care Tech as required.
  • Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
