About The Position

The Endoscopy Technician is responsible for performing a variety of direct patient care activities and assisting with endoscopic procedures under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and Gastroenterologist. Responsibilities include assisting patients, staff and physicians as needed to maintain a high level of operational efficiency, patient data management through transcription and documentation, and customer service while providing quality care to designated patient population. Supports best use of resources in management on equipment, supplies, and other department resources.

Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma or Equivalent
  • 1 Year Medical Assistant experience in related clinical area.
  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) - American Heart Association -REQUIRED

Nice To Haves

  • 1 Year endoscopy lab experience.
  • Certificate of completion of ASGE Endoscopy Technician training program is required within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs direct patient care activities and assists with endoscopic procedures.
  • Assists patients, staff, and physicians to maintain operational efficiency.
  • Manages patient data through transcription and documentation.
  • Provides customer service while delivering quality care.
  • Supports the best use of resources in managing equipment, supplies, and department resources.
  • Provides high-level disinfection of all endoscopes/washers based on ASGE, manufacturer guidelines, and Sharp Policy and Procedure.
  • Maintains quality logbook documentation for regulatory compliance.
  • Organizes and completes daily requirements and responsibilities within time frames.
  • Ensures optimal workflow by assisting in transfers of patients as necessary and fostering efficient turnaround of rooms.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies, may assist with ordering supplies and restocking rooms.
  • Ensures readiness of reports and information to maximize patient visit.
  • Completes work within assigned hours and responds to changing circumstances and prioritizes patient needs.
  • Responds to urgent and emergent situations in a calm and capable manner.
  • Ensures prompt and efficient return of telephone messages according to established policy.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves problem calls.
  • Enters authorizations and schedules surgeries and procedures in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assists in other departments as assigned to meet staffing needs and travels to other sites as business needs arise.
  • Serves as a departmental resource for endoscope reprocessing and equipment maintenance.
  • Performs patient care activities under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Assists the gastroenterologist during endoscopic procedures.
  • Demonstrates clinical knowledge and skill in assigned area and within scope of practice.
  • Performs and assists with all tests and procedures in the assigned department.
  • Administers medications safely and accurately per guidelines and written order, ensuring verification by licensed person and documentation.
  • Prepares patient for examination or procedure.
  • Obtains complete and accurate consent for procedures/surgery.
  • Prepares and labels biopsies in a thorough and accurate manner.
  • Accurately documents patient care per protocol.
  • Partners with physician to continuously learn and expand clinical knowledge base.
  • Listens to patients, collects pertinent information, recognizes urgency, and routes to physicians.
  • Returns phone calls according to physician instruction.
  • May schedule patient appointments.
  • Reviews pre-printed teaching materials or written instructions from the provider with patient in partnership with physician.
  • Uses universal precautions and demonstrates knowledge of infection control policies and procedures.
  • Provides assistance to PSRs in resolving issues related to front desk responsibilities including scheduling and telephone management.
  • Acts as a positive role model and ensures appropriate service delivery.
  • Participates in clinical projects as directed by physician or manager.
  • Actively participates in endoscopy department annual competency training and departmental in-services.
  • Aides in teaching new staff correct maintenance and processing of endoscopy equipment.
  • Orients staff to all aspects of the endoscopy technician role.
  • Updates knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and changes to ASGE standards of practice.
  • Obtains tissue specimens, brushings, and washings during endoscopy procedures under supervision.
  • Correctly communicates and verifies specimen labeling.
  • Correctly documents specimens in the log book prior to transporting them to the laboratory.
