Encoder Software/Firmware Engineer

The Timken Company•Traverse City, MI

About The Position

The Encoder Software/Firmware Engineer supports Timken’s product development and production group in Traverse City, Michigan, which is integrated with Cone Drive. The role develops software for dedicated PC-based equipment used to program and test magnetic position encoders, as well as firmware for embedded microcontrollers on encoder circuit boards. The microcontrollers perform real-time processing of digital signals representing digital and analog transducer outputs. Work includes digital signal processing, filtering, and industrial communication protocol implementation. The engineer also selects components for custom encoder test equipment and embedded designs, collaborates with PCB layout resources on analog design practices, helps customers troubleshoot communications with Timken products, and assists in specifying and evaluating designs for new encoder ASIC chips. The role may involve access to U.S. export-controlled technical data and hardware. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States and eligible to receive applicable export license authorizations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Four to eight years of industry-related embedded work experience.
  • General knowledge of programming test equipment and user-interface development.
  • Experience developing real-time firmware, including signal processing and communications interfaces.
  • Electromechanical assembly and testing skills for product development.
  • Ability to read and understand prints, process sheets, and engineering specifications.
  • Ability to use and understand basic gaging.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be eligible to receive U.S. export license authorizations if required for access to export-controlled technical data or hardware.
