The EMT Intern Academy is a 12-week full-time training program preparing participants to deliver emergency medical care. Interns learn departmental policies and procedures, interpret technical materials and maps, navigate streets, operate EMT equipment such as voice radios, identify hazardous materials, and follow safety procedures. They participate in practical sessions, learn to assess emergencies and determine appropriate actions, and develop the skills needed to perform required tasks proficiently. Participants must maintain an academic average of at least 70% throughout the course to qualify for the registry exam; a nonpassing midterm testing percentage results in disqualification. All assignments must be completed, class guidelines followed, and 100% attendance maintained for classes and clinical assignments. Up to 16 hours of class time may be made up for emergencies only. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, for 12 weeks. Interns are expected to work effectively as part of a team, maintain a professional appearance and attitude, use downtime to support department needs or personal education, and perform additional duties as assigned in support of the department’s mission.
