About The Position

The EMS Instructor is responsible for the delivery of high-quality instruction in all Emergency Medical Services (EMS) programs, including Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic courses, at Mitchell Community College. The position involves teaching, instructional development, student mentoring, and compliance with state and national standards, including those mandated by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services (NCOEMS) and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CoAEMSP). The EMS Instructor plays a key role in preparing students for success in the EMS profession. Salary will commensurate with education and experience.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in using technology for instructional purposes, including learning management systems (LMS) and simulation tools.
  • Knowledge of state and national EMS standards and accreditation requirements, including NCOEMS and CoAEMSP.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to the unique nature and role of the College as a learning-centered institution.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology consistent with the position of a Paramedic.
  • Ability to self-motivate and have excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and successfully in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to set and maintain standard of a high volume of productivity in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess a high degree of accuracy with attention to detail and the ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines as required.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to collaborate successfully on a team while applying sound and independent judgement.
  • Associate’s degree in Emergency Medical Services or a related field required (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
  • Current North Carolina Paramedic certification or the ability to obtain one prior to hire.
  • AHA Instructor certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Instructor certifications in Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certifications with instructor certification preferred or within one year.
  • Level I EMS Instructor credential from NCOEMS or the ability to obtain prior to hire (Level II preferred).
  • Minimum of three years of clinical experience as a paramedic, with prior teaching or training experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an EMS educator or related experience.
  • Experience in an EMS educational setting or preceptor role is desirable.
  • Evidence of U.S. work authorization is required.

Responsibilities

  • Teach EMS courses, including EMR, EMT, and Paramedic programs, using a variety of instructional methods such as lectures, hands-on skills labs, and simulations.
  • Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans that align with NCOEMS and CoAEMSP standards.
  • Develop course syllabi and provide appropriate written information to students concerning course evaluation and criteria.
  • Facilitate student learning through in-class, interactive activities; using appropriate technology.
  • Evaluate and monitor student performance through written exams, practical assessments, and field experience evaluations.
  • Provide constructive feedback and mentorship to support student success.
  • Assist in the development and revision of EMS program curricula to reflect current industry practices, state requirements, and accreditation standards.
  • Incorporate innovative teaching methods, including technology and simulation, to enhance student learning experiences.
  • Ensure course materials are updated and aligned with NCOEMS and CoAEMSP guidelines.
  • Notify supervisor of any class changes or cancellations and post-course change signs on classrooms.
  • Prepares and submits instructional records, reports, and grades established by institutional policy.
  • Work with Program Coordinator in remediation with student performance.
  • Abide by all rules, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Maintain accessibility to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ensure all instructional activities meet accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with the EMS Program Director and Clinical Coordinator to ensure seamless integration of classroom, lab, and clinical components.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and program documentation in accordance with institutional and accreditation policies.
  • Stay current with advancements in EMS education, clinical practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance instructional skills and knowledge of the EMS profession.
  • Maintain required certifications and credentials necessary for teaching in the EMS programs.
  • Participate in recruitment and retention initiatives to promote EMS programs at the college.
  • Assist with program events, such as information sessions, open houses, and advisory board meetings.
  • Support the college’s mission and goals by serving on committees and participating in institutional activities as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with program faculty and staff, clinical sites and agencies.
  • Assists in student recruitment and retention.
  • Participate in departmental and divisional orientation and training sessions.
  • Completes other duties and assignments as directed which support the mission and initiatives of the college.
  • Evaluates student information and provides appropriate feedback in a timely manner.
