About The Position

Under the direction of the Employment Services Director, the Employment Counsellor assists immigrants in setting and meeting their employment goals through developing and delivering in-house employment programs and services, providing individualized instruction in the labour market, education and training equivalency, job search techniques, and interview strategies.

Requirements

  • University degree in Commerce, Business Administration, or social sciences, humanities, public relations or adult education, and, one year of work experience providing employment counselling services, OR Graduate of post-secondary program (2 years minimum) in adult education, job-coaching, or career counselling, and two years’ work experience providing employment counselling services.
  • Working knowledge of the labour market and keeps informed of community events.
  • Must complete a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check in good standing and within three months prior to first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies clients’ barriers to employment and advises clients on how to overcome their employment barriers.
  • Helps clients realize their immediate employment goals by providing individualized instruction in the labour market, job search techniques, and interview strategies.
  • Guides clients in their active job search by one-to-one coaching, preparing or critiquing resumes and cover letters, making employer contacts, and follow-up activities.
  • Manages cases by identifying non-employment barriers, referring clients to other service providers, documenting case files, and sharing client information through case consultations.
  • Assesses current programming material, identifies clients’ needs, and adjusts curriculum and/or material accordingly.
  • Develops program materials for new and existing programming as needed.
  • Facilitates group/classroom workshops/programs to educate and guide clients in their job search.
  • Ensures service quality and collaborative work relationships by providing guidance to new staff and acting as a resource person in an identified area of expertise.
  • Provides clients with intake assessments, information, guidance, and referrals to appropriate training or equivalency assessments.
  • Keeps director/team leaders informed by regular reporting as required and advising them on emergent issues.
  • Provides program information and data by maintaining client records, preparing required reports, participating in staff meetings, and entering all outstanding information into their respective databases.
  • Improves employment opportunities for newcomers by negotiating training and partnership agreements with external local employers.
  • Connects with external local employers in the labour market and advocates on the clients’ behalf for equal employment opportunities.
  • Fosters respect for cultural diversity by sensitizing employers and other service providers to immigrant and cross-cultural issues; participates on external committees.
  • Builds partnerships with Saskatoon business community to help connect newcomer job seekers to local employers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
