University Settlement partners with over 40,000 New Yorkers annually in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn to foster healthy, stable, and remarkable lives. For nearly 140 years, we have combatted poverty and systemic inequality by developing effective social services in collaboration with our communities. As the first Settlement House in the United States, founded in 1886, we uphold the values of that movement by meeting New Yorkers where they are, actively listening, and fostering responsive cooperation. Our mission is to build community strength by creating stable foundations for individuals of all ages to grow and achieve their dreams. We integrate civic engagement, equality, and communal action into all our programs, including early childhood education, youth development, healthy aging, mental health and wellness, English classes for adult immigrants, community centers, and the arts. The Crisis Management System (CMS), launched in 2014, is a collaborative effort of over 70 organizations dedicated to promoting peace, community safety, and healing in NYC neighborhoods most impacted by gun violence. Utilizing the evidence-based Cure Violence model, a public health approach, CMS employs credible messengers to identify and engage individuals at high risk of involvement in gun violence and to de-escalate conflicts before they escalate. The CMS program will serve the 88th precinct area of Brooklyn, including the Ingersoll, Whitman, and Farragut housing developments, acting as the frontline in preventing and interrupting conflicts that could lead to gun violence and retaliation in real time. The Employment Advisor will report to the Program Director and will lead the development of educational and workforce opportunities for participants based on their needs and interests.
