About The Position

National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is seeking an Employee In Charge (EIC) to provide essential on-track safety services for freight railroads, transit systems, state DOTs, and rail industry partners. The role ensures that work on railroad rights-of-way is conducted safely and includes field coordination, communication with dispatchers and train crews, and enforcement of railroad, state, and federal policies. The position operates in a field environment alongside active tracks, with travel expected 50% to 85% of the time. The successful candidate must be able to pass pre-employment and recurrent background checks, drug and alcohol testing, and classroom training.

Requirements

Proficiency using tablets, smartphones, and communication tools to support coordination of train movements.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
Ability to travel for extended periods, sometimes months at a time.
Valid driver's license.
High school diploma or equivalent.
At least 2 years of experience with a railroad company, preferably in the maintenance of way department.
Ability to successfully complete federal, client-specific, and/or company-specific training.
Ability to pass pre-employment and recurrent background checks and drug/alcohol testing.

Responsibilities

Provide on-track safety, including setting up derails, track signs, and other safety tools.
Prepare daily field reports and report rule violations.
Coordinate activities at the job site.
Communicate by radio with dispatchers and train crews about worksite safety status.
Conduct clear, concise, and thorough mandatory job briefings with all crew members before they enter the track.
Enforce railroad, state, and federal policies.
