Engineer - Emerging Technology

Skanska USA•Los Angeles, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Skanska is seeking an Emerging Technology Engineer to build and deploy custom software tools that bridge the gap between enterprise systems and project-specific workflows. The role is embedded on active civil projects in defined rotations, where the engineer maps how work is performed, identifies high-value automation opportunities, and delivers working tools before moving to the next assignment. Each tool is delivered alongside a documented workflow map and packaged for adoption by other projects through a shared Skanska tool catalog. Working at the intersection of construction operations and IT, the engineer uses AI-assisted development to create purpose-built tools and may also evaluate and pilot other emerging technologies, such as reality capture, IoT, and machine-learning use cases, when they address a measured project problem. The engineer partners with project teams, operations leaders, and IT to ensure tools return measurable hours, integrate with existing systems of record, and follow company data governance practices. The role involves working from a jobsite trailer, attending field walks, wearing PPE, and collaborating with field teams to understand their technical pain points.

Requirements

  • Full-stack software development experience with a track record of shipping working tools quickly.
  • Experience with React, TypeScript, and a managed backend such as Firebase or Supabase.
  • Fluency with AI-assisted development workflows, including agentic coding tools.
  • Strong data modeling instincts.
  • Willingness to work from a jobsite trailer, attend field walks, wear PPE, and collaborate with field teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, or 8 years of equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in software development, construction technology, or a construction role with demonstrated tool building.
