About The Position

Under immediate supervision, learns to dispatch Police, Fire and emergency medical personnel and equipment; actively participates in dispatch training courses; performs related learning and testing activities, and participates in field training exercises to fully develop dispatching skills with the assistance of higher-level dispatchers to perform a variety of emergency communication duties; and performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • One (1) year of work experience which included one (1) or a combination of the following: public contact, customer service, clerical duties, radio telephone or telephone switchboard operation, or dispatching.
  • Work experience which involved the performance of a variety of clerical tasks and demonstrated knowledge of office practices and procedures, and the ability to carry out procedures in clerical work systems, and operate various kinds of office equipment including computers, Microsoft Office, and other technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Attends radio dispatcher entry level training and receives instruction in various phases of emergency communication in a wide variety of subject matters.
  • Participates in a Radio Dispatcher Training Program under the direct supervision of a designated certified dispatch trainer and performs a variety of emergency communication duties.
  • Performs a variety of emergency communication duties with the assistance of experienced radio dispatch personnel.
  • Receives telephonic communication from the public seeking police, fire, medical and other requests for emergency assistance.
  • Elicits relevant/accurate information and facts necessary to ensure required emergency personnel are assigned to the request for services.
  • Assigns via telephonic and/or radio transmission call for service for police, fire, medical and other County, State, or Federal agencies as required.
  • Provides information to the public regarding police matters and direct inquiries to the proper police personnel.
  • Classifies and codes criminal and non-criminal cases.
  • Receives case data from reporting personnel and enters same into various computerized teleprocessing terminals.
  • Makes vehicle and missing persons inquiries into the computer system.
  • Maintains and updates logs of abandoned and towed vehicles, missing and wanted persons, and other miscellaneous bulletins and reports.
  • Performs a variety of difficult clerical duties in the communications center.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
