About The Position

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is seeking dedicated Emergency Physicians to join the team at Squamish General Hospital (SGH) Emergency Department. These positions involve a mix of weekend, daytime, and night shifts, with potential for additional shifts. Compensation is through a group service contract, and positions may be eligible for Rural Program funding. The SGH ED serves a population of approximately 24,000, with a 13-bed department handling around 20,000 visits annually. The role includes cross-coverage for the acute medical inpatient unit and an adjoining long-term care facility for urgent issues. The department currently operates with four single-coverage physician shifts per day. On-site resources include lab, CT scanning, x-ray, and ultrasound. Specialist consultation is available at Lions Gate Hospital, and Anesthesia backup is available 24/7. Squamish General Hospital is a level 5 rural trauma centre without general surgery or internal medicine on site. The ideal candidates will be strong communicators, effective team players, and passionate about delivering high-quality emergency care in a rural setting, with a commitment to ongoing skill development and the local medical community. Living locally is an asset for urgent call-outs.

Requirements

  • Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.
  • Hold a CCFP (Canadian College of Family Practitioners).
  • Experience in Emergency Medicine in a similar setting or completed additional training in Emergency Medicine (CCFP-EM program, FRCPC Emergency Medicine, or EM certification through successful completion of the CCFP-EM examination).
  • Equivalent enhanced skills programs (e.g., Nanaimo Emergency Education Program) will be considered.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - Mandatory
  • Current College of Physicians of BC (CPSBC) – Full
  • Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) - Mandatory
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PAL) - Mandatory

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) – Desired
  • Canadian College of Family Practitioners (CCFP) – Emergency Medicine – Desired
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) - Eligible
  • Residing in the Squamish area.
  • More than five years of experience in rural emergency medicine.

Responsibilities
