About The Position

Reporting to the Fire & Emergency Coordinator or designate, this position is responsible for supporting and advancing Haisla Nation’s emergency preparedness, mitigation, response, recovery, and resilience initiatives. This position will play an important role in helping protect the community through planning, training, public education, and coordination during emergencies.

Requirements

  • Post Secondary Diploma in Fire Science, Safety Management or related field or equivalent combination of education, experience and training.
  • NFPA 1001: Professional Firefighter Level 1&2.
  • NFPA 1002: Driver/Operator.
  • NFPA 1021: Fire Officer 1.
  • NFPA 1041: Fire Service Instructor 1.
  • EMALB Licensed First Responder (FR) or Emergency Medical Responder (EMR).
  • ICS 100 / 200 / 300 training.
  • 1 to 3 years of related experience.
  • Strong knowledge of fire prevention and emergency response protocols.
  • Demonstrated competency using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint), SharePoint, related databases and the Internet.
  • Working knowledge of First Nations structure, and of funding opportunities for First Nations emergency planning and management.
  • Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions in emergency situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends when required during activations.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
  • Possess valid B.C. Driver’s license.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, develop, and maintain emergency management plans, policies, and procedures.
  • Support emergency preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery initiatives.
  • Assist with Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) readiness, activation, and coordination.
  • Organize emergency exercises, drills, and training opportunities.
  • Deliver community preparedness education and awareness initiatives.
  • Coordinate emergency notifications, reporting, and documentation.
  • Liaise with internal departments, neighboring agencies, government partners, and stakeholders.
  • Identify and pursue grant and funding opportunities related to emergency management.
  • Support planning for wildfire, flood, storm, tsunami, and other hazard events.
  • Maintain emergency supplies, inventories, and readiness systems.
  • Participate in after-action reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief or designate.
