About The Position

When you step into the role as a Dispatcher One with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Emergency Communication Center (UAFECC), you will become part of a recognized team of professionals. We serve the University of Alaska Fairbanks with integrity, honor and commitment. As a Dispatcher One you will learn from the bottom up, how to be an emergency dispatcher. Starting with basic call entry, our Computer Automated Dispatch (CAD) system will be your first stop. You will learn to type information into the call screen, update unit information and use the CAD to keep track of ongoing calls. As a Dispatcher One it will be your responsibility to ensure that correct and timely information is updated into the CAD for the responding units. Everyday you will be tasked with handling a variety of systems, including alarm monitoring. From general alarms to fire and burglary, it will be part of your job duties to learn and understand the appropriate response type for each alarm and to dispatch accordingly. The alarms aren’t the only system as a Dispatcher One you will be expected to monitor. At any given moment the Dispatch center you could receive emergency phone calls or you could be answering an after hours call from a student needing let into their dorm. Each of these calls carries their own level of service, as a Dispatcher One you will be tasked with organizing these calls and correctly handling their dispatch. A lot of the after hours calls on campus require you, as a Dispatcher One, to understands who on campus handles such issues. You will need to understand the different departments on campus and when to dispatch them. To thrive in this role, it will be imperative that you complete required trainings on time and efficiently. As a Dispatcher One you will be issued a variety of trainings that will need to be completed within your first year of employment. These trainings range from basic call taking training to National Incident Management trainings through FEMA. As a member of UAFECC we believe that keeping ourselves up to date on changes in our fields through training is very important and we embrace a willingness to learn. Most of our trainings are self-paced, so it will be important for you as a Dispatcher One to be on top of your trainings as well as your daily work. Time management is an important skill to master as a Dispatcher One.

  • Able to work in a rapid pace, ever changing and multitasking environment
  • Employ a sense of service
  • Be calm, courteous and helpful with every caller and every visitor
  • Must be able to type a minimum of 35 wpm
  • To be considered for this position, applicants must include a cover letter and resume.
  • A typing test will be required.
  • To be eligible for this position, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
