About The Position

Under close/general supervision by licensed personnel, the Emergency Department Technician will perform a variety of functions in support and care of patients requiring urgent or emergency care in an urgent care or emergency medical setting. The Emergency Department Technician will work directly with and provide close observation of patients assigned to their care. Care assignment is delegated through registered nurses and/or providers. The Emergency Department Technician will maintain an orderly work environment at nursing station/exam areas; responds to patient care needs; transports patients; delivers specimens to lab; data entry for orders; answers phone, performs EKGs and directs calls to RN's on duty as required. The Emergency Department Technician is also responsible for direct patient interaction with patients experiencing behavioral, mental, substance abuse (high risk patients), and other conditions that effects or impairs a patient’s ability to behave in a sound and rational manner. Must possess knowledge of the principles, procedures, techniques, and trends in mental health crisis intervention and have considerable knowledge in human behavior. The Emergency Department Technician will provide therapeutic interaction, understand escalating behavior, and intervene to de-escalate behavior. The Emergency Department Technician will also provide 1:1 observation, ensuring patient and associate safety, of high risk patients, both in the ER and all other areas of the hospital. The Emergency Department Technician reports directly to the Director Emergency Department.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Basic rhythm recognition competency within 6 months of hire
  • BLS required within 3 months of hire
  • One to three months related experience or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Typing skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Computer Charting
  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically within a multi-functional team
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to successfully function in a fast paced, service oriented environment
  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with lab draws as needed.
  • Interact routinely with patients, observe behaviors and communicate significant observations to nursing staff.
  • Receive, greet and direct patients, visitors and hospital personnel.
  • Provide accurate responses in a friendly, timely and courteous manner.
  • Access, manage and update patient medical records through Hospital Electronic Medical Record Information System.
  • Maintain HIPAA rules, regulations and follow "Patients’ Rights Policy" at all times.
  • Appropriately direct phone calls to RN's, relay messages, maintain confidentiality in department at all times.
  • Utilize proper phone etiquette at all times.
  • Monitor behavior, recognize behavioral escalation, provide therapeutic de-escalation.
  • Coordinate and assist with care as directed.
  • Attend to physical needs of patients and family in collaboration with RN's and Physicians, including assistance with personal hygiene tasks, such as bathing, toileting and caring for incontinence if necessary along with feeding and mobility.
  • Acquire and accurately document vital signs.
  • Complete assigned duties of data entry for orders and procedures.
  • Provide therapeutic patient interaction.
  • Utilize Crisis Prevention Intervention when exposed to volatile patients to maintain personal safety while ensuring safety for the patient and other individuals on the unit.
  • Foster good public relations for the hospital.
  • Demonstrate behaviors consistent with organizational mission and goals.
  • Follow all applicable hospital policies and procedures.
  • Follow policies and procedures for infection control and facility safety in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of information management as appropriate.
  • Work cooperatively and productively at all times with physicians, Social workers, crisis response workers, nurses, other providers and staff, patients and families.
  • Coordinate activity in department at direction of RN's and communicate well with all members of patient care team to meet patient needs.
  • Closely monitor patient and environment to provide safe area for both associates and patient.
  • Demonstrate proficiency and assist with other technical functions such as: obtaining 12-lead EKGs, assist with wound care, insertion of Foley catheters, assist with positioning patients, application of orthopedic splints and dressings.
  • Assist nursing staff in responding to emergency situations.
  • Assist with resuscitation / CPR and emergency airway procedures.
  • Monitor and document nutritional intake.
  • Assist in assessment and planning for high risk patient services.
  • Provide direct care and supportive counseling.
  • Respond to all code grays when available.
  • Participate in facility Quality Improvement/IOP Program.
  • Demonstrate skills in verbal, nonverbal and written communication in a dignified and courteous manner.
  • Assist in transporting patient to rooms /procedures and maintain comfort and safety.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competency of role when a patient is being transferred in to our facility or to another facility, either by ground or helicopter.
  • Stock rooms and nurses station and prepare area to receive patients; photocopy as needed.
  • Inventory and requisition supplies as needed.
  • Accurately chart patient information and data obtained.
  • Demonstrate knowledge on use of fax machines and copy machine.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Complete mandatory yearly education required.
  • Assist in unit record keeping and maintain organized and up to date file cabinets.
  • Attend unit meetings and read hospital e-mail.
  • May be assigned to monitor patients on a continual basis.
  • Be available to work as scheduled and report to work on time.
  • Be available to work overtime, if needed.
  • Be willing to accept supervision and work well with others.
