The Emergency Department Nurse works in a Level III Trauma Center in Puyallup, Washington, serving an average of 200 patients per day. The department treats patients from pediatrics through geriatrics and handles a broad range of conditions, including trauma, gunshot wounds, sepsis, COVID-19, high-volume STEMI, stroke, diabetic ketoacidosis, mental health concerns, respiratory issues, and other high-acuity medical cases. Day-shift ratios are typically one nurse to four or five patients, with flexibility based on acuity and staffing. The role requires recent EPIC experience, emergency department experience, and competency in telemetry. Unit support includes emergency room technicians, a resource/float nurse, 24/7 respiratory therapy, security, a house supervisor, social work assigned to the Emergency Department, and 24/7 pharmacy support. A charge nurse rarely takes a patient assignment. Orientation includes a first day of new employee orientation, EPIC training if needed, introduction to the educator, and time in the mental health and front areas. The second day is a 12-hour shift with an assigned preceptor. Traveler telemetry competency must be completed and passed before the start date. Shifts include days/mids starting at 0700 or 1100, and mids/nights starting at 1500 or 1900. Weekly scheduling is preferred but may change according to unit needs. Weekend scheduling varies based on requirements. The schedule is available three weeks in advance, with notice provided approximately 10 days before the start date. Time-off requests are approved by the Nurse Manager. Nurses are required to work two of five major holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day.
